Invasive species ride tsunami debris to US shore

When a floating dock the size of a boxcar washed up on a sandy beach in Oregon, beachcombers got excited because it was the largest piece of debris from last year's tsunami in Japan to show up on the West Coast.

But scientists worried it represented a whole new way for invasive species of seaweed, crabs and other marine organisms to break the earth's natural barriers and further muck up the West Coast's marine environments. And more invasive species could be hitching rides on tsunami debris expected to arrive in the weeks and months to come.

"We know extinctions occur with invasions," said John Chapman, assistant professor of fisheries and invasive species specialist at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center. "This is like arrows shot into the dark. Some of them could hit a mark."

Though the global economy has accelerated the process in recent decades by the sheer volume of ships, most from Asia, entering West Coast ports, the marine invasion has been in full swing since 1869, when the transcontinental railroad brought the first shipment of East Coast oysters packed in seaweed and mud to San Francisco, said Andrew Cohen, director of the Center for Research on Aquatic Bioinvasions in Richmond, Calif. For nearly a century before then, ships sailing up the coast carried barnacles and seaweeds.

This does not surprise me. This is exactly what we have been worried about besides *ahem* at the Great Lakes. Remember, the zebra mussels that invaded Lake Michigan? Cost millions, barnacles on a a barge. Yep. Only thing Daley didn't chump out on.

These invasive species are very adaptable from salt water to fresh. Ugh. We know this as this is not the first time this has happened and it cost millions upon millions, and it will cost many more millions if not billions to clean up our biggest fresh water reservoir if they invade our Great Lakes. Take note. Not good. We cannot survive without water. Fresh water. Why do you think this is not taken lightly? 90% of the fresh water reserve.

Let's hope we, as a Nation, we recognize this dilemma. We can drill our own oil and have our own fresh water, that's a fact. The middle east can have all the oil they want, but I'll be damned if they ask for a drop of our precious water.

Save our Great Lakes and all lakes throughout America. It doesn't take long for invasive species to travel. Gas is gas. If it comes down to it, let "them" drink "their" oil and let US prevail and protect our family, land, home, lakes, our way of life and FTA. That's what I say. If they don't like it, too bad.

Precisely why it's mandated that ballast be exchanged on the high seas but that's always been difficult to enforce and even then only after the fact.

It happens, it is, in fact, how trees, grasses, birds and all kinds of things made their way around the world - is it bad? is it good? Only time will tell
