Scientology has a controversial reputation. Some accuse the organization of sinister cult-like activities, while others hail the spiritual cleansing. Kerry Hiatt gives a first-person narrative inside Scientology. She received an invitation to "cross the Bridge To Total Freedom," but instead she fled in panic after only a few hours of introductions and tests.

DAILYMAIL.CO.UK reports:
The invitation from the Scientologists had suggested we celebrate Independence Day at 'the Friendliest Place in the Whole World'. Why should I refuse?

Just sounds like Science Fiction fantasy to me. It was, after all, founded by Science Fiction and Fantasy author L. Ron Hubbard.

I'd like to see the freak show they have going on behind those walls. I've love a look at their records showing how they brain washed people into giving away their money and lives.

I would be curious to know how many children under the age of 16 who are members of the Sea Org (or are in the US under a "religious worker" visa) they will have working there in the kitchens and toilets and basement for 60+ hours per week, paying them $20 for that workweek and never letting them see their parents or go to a real school.
I would be curious to know if any more "Lisa Macphersons" are going to be held there or in the attached Fort Harrison against their will to the point of death by dehydration. Or will there be a contingent of the RPF held there to slave in inhuman conditions for 100+ hours per week while enduring mental and emotional torture and eating table-scrap "slop" from buckets on the floor?
Or will this shiny new monument to Ron's ego and his followers' gullibility, having been financed by donations several times over, be merely a place for the more affluent faithful to be milked (or is that "bilked") of their remaining money?
Either way, I would just love to see a demonstration of the Oiliness Table ;-)

I'm curious how long it takes for this cult to completely crumble. A whole mission of 40 people just defected in Israel because of their issues with the leader of the "Church of Scientology", David Miscavige, mismanaging the CoS, going against Hubbard's policies and conctantly hammering people for donations. Countless people have been defecting in recent years, including former high ranking Scientologists, but never before has a whole mission turned its back on the Scientology enterprise. Scientology is being taught independent of the "Church". ALL of Scientology's once secret doucments and levels are freely available on the internet. More people are better informed about what organized Scientology truly is. The media isn't as afraid to publish articles about Scientology anymore (they used to sue anyone and everyone back in the day).
It's all falling apart like a house of cards.

This is a cult. Anyone who thinks differently is either a member or they're extremely ignorant. Any organization that 1. tries changing your persona and your mind and 2. demands exorbitant amounts of money to do it IS a cult.

There was a rumor around LASFS (Los Angels Science Fiction and Fantasy Society) that Hubbard started scientology on a bet with several other science fiction writers at a poker game. I heard that store from A.E. Van Vogt

Scientology is classified as a religion and I have no interest in it. That said, they have the same rights as any other religion.

I did read Dianetics in the mid '70's but was not impressed. Before Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard was a prolific pulp fiction writer. Some of his stuff was pretty good and worth a read.

I have a general interest in cults, so reading the article was interesting. I have no intention of getting involved in the typical high-pressure indoctrination/sales-pitch environment that's described though.
