According to numerous reports, Clemson University has a major squirrel problem.
The Charleston The Post and Courier reports that squirrels are three times more prevalent on the Clemson campus than in normal wooded area, causing numerous problems including damage to trees.
The Independent Mail of Anderson, S.C., reports that a “great squirrel roundup” was held on the campus during December: “Clemson contracted with U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Service biologists to remove an abundance of the critters and then euthanize them.”
Only 200 squirrels were trapped, the amount limited by the National Environmental Policy Act. The SDL applauds this effort but we feel the school has not gone far enough to curtail the bushy-tailed menace.
A bounty should be put on each squirrel. For every squirrel a student brings in dead, the student should receive a 1% cash rebate from their tuition. Problem solved. SQUIRREL SQUIRRELS

In Jail For Shooting Squirrel?

This afternoon my apprentice related to me his uncle shot a squirril with a pellet gun and had to serve two days IN JAIL after his nieghbor made a fuss. He said his uncle was lucky, he could have got up to a month. Now I don't know how exact his facts are or when this happened, he did say it was in Denver and his uncle moved VERY soon after. YIKES!
In Colorado, Alberts, Fox, and Pine squirrels have a season and require permits and have limits. March 24, 2006 Squirrel season here runs from September 3 to January 31. Yes, you need a license. No, you can't shoot them in any city I know of. John

Why did he murder the squirrel? Did it break the law or was it mistaken for being a "nut" when it was only actually "eating" a nut? There's a lot we don't know. I suggest you contact Eric Holder and see if the squirrel killer should stand trial in federal court. By the way, was it a "gray" squirrel or a "black" squirrel (or a mix)? I think killing a "black" squirrel is considered a more serious crime.

Many years ago, while in Connecticut, when I was in high school, I found two red squirrels that had been booted out of their nest by Mama Red Squirrel (their eyes weren't even open yet). My science teacher confirmed that they had been abandoned and said to feed them with milk mixed with sugar thru an eye dropper. I built a box and covered the top with a dark towel and put torn rags inside. They were even very neat; they'd poop and pee behind the nest I built but never, ever went inside. It really was remarkable. I had an army jacket with two big breast pockets in front and they'd go everywhere with me inside their pocket. The two little cuties flourished but then graduation happened and a neighbor said she'd take them. She put them in her beautiful enclosed porch which they proceeded to gnaw and destroy. Eventually, they were released into the neighborhood in New Jersey and I saw them on occasion a few times thereafter (at least, they looked like mine). Anyway, squirrels are great but belong in the wild and definitely should NEVER be shot.They are easy to trap and relocate well. Incidentally, red squirrels in North Jersey are close to rare.

In Virginia I wanted to kill those fat squirrals...they filled up my gutter drains with Pecans..they are sneaky. I noticed the rain water filling up the gutters and overflowing..checked the gutter drain and it was solid from top to bottom with Pecans..the drain pipe must have weighed over 60 lbs....they worked their asses off to fill it up!!

In NYS I had a similar problem with chipmunks. One actually learned to come into the house thru our dogs' doggie door and proceeded to steal and hide the dogs' kibble inside a rolled rug. Every once in awhile, a few times each week, the dogs would suddenly tear for the kitchen dog food bowl from wherever they happened to be in the house. One day, I had to move the rolled rug and you would never believe the amount of kibble that Chippy had secreted away for the winter; pounds and pounds. Unfortunately, one day thereafter one of my dogs finally caught Chippy. He did not hurt it and let him go, but we never saw Chippy again. Apparently his taste for kibble was not as great as his desire to survive.

LOL...my neighbor in va had a fireplace that wasn't used...squirrels came down the chimney and pushed the damper open, or it was open..they had a party in her living room and totally freaked her out..she called and I had to catch it...they have moves and are quick little buggers...I did finally catch it with a bedsheet...I installed a screen for their chimney to keep future squirrels from invading her house...she also wasn't a fan of snakes in her yard either....

A pellet gun was used to shoot squirrels. That is a crazy law. Maybe he should have shoot his neighbor with the pellet gun. That's a reason to go to jail. Send his uncle to Hayneville, Alabama. He can kill all the squirrels he want to. I'm tired of them eating up all of our pears.

If the squirrel is destroying your property you should have the right to eliminate him quickly. Not hunt them. Just protect your property. I personelly hand feed my outdoor pets. They don't destroy anything.
