According to numerous reports, Clemson University has a major squirrel problem.
The Charleston The Post and Courier reports that squirrels are three times more prevalent on the Clemson campus than in normal wooded area, causing numerous problems including damage to trees.
The Independent Mail of Anderson, S.C., reports that a “great squirrel roundup” was held on the campus during December: “Clemson contracted with U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Service biologists to remove an abundance of the critters and then euthanize them.”
Only 200 squirrels were trapped, the amount limited by the National Environmental Policy Act. The SDL applauds this effort but we feel the school has not gone far enough to curtail the bushy-tailed menace.
A bounty should be put on each squirrel. For every squirrel a student brings in dead, the student should receive a 1% cash rebate from their tuition. Problem solved. SQUIRREL SQUIRRELS

In Jail For Shooting Squirrel?

This afternoon my apprentice related to me his uncle shot a squirril with a pellet gun and had to serve two days IN JAIL after his nieghbor made a fuss. He said his uncle was lucky, he could have got up to a month. Now I don't know how exact his facts are or when this happened, he did say it was in Denver and his uncle moved VERY soon after. YIKES!
In Colorado, Alberts, Fox, and Pine squirrels have a season and require permits and have limits. March 24, 2006 Squirrel season here runs from September 3 to January 31. Yes, you need a license. No, you can't shoot them in any city I know of. John

Why did he murder the squirrel? Did it break the law or was it mistaken for being a "nut" when it was only actually "eating" a nut? There's a lot we don't know. I suggest you contact Eric Holder and see if the squirrel killer should stand trial in federal court. By the way, was it a "gray" squirrel or a "black" squirrel (or a mix)? I think killing a "black" squirrel is considered a more serious crime.

A woman faces jail time for feeding them and a man does time for killing them? Wow. Pardon the pun, but that's overkill.

I feed the squirrels, they don't bother me. I believe we are allowed to kill varmints that are being destructive or a nuisance here, though I've never done so. I try to live in harmony with nature and the only time I kill is when I hunt and that goes into the freezer.

Squirrels are rodents. Cute, but rodents nonetheless. They can transmit rabies, hantavirus, and carry fleas, ticks, lice, and mites that transmit other diseases, like the plague. They can destroy trees. Their feces is associated with salmonella.

Where I lived in Lake Forest, the squirrels were so bold, they'd try and follow me in the house. They'd decimate my bird feeders and piss my cats off something fierce! My children would think they were so cute and we had to watch them like eagles outside (not that we didn't anyway but squirrels are FAST!).

So they are cute, and they can beg so sweetly! But when they become a nuisance, time to thin the herd.

I am so conflicted when it comes to animals rights! Some pictures can make me cry but yours are pretty funny!

But if animals become a public nuisance "something" has to be done! Especially when they are carrying communicable diseases.

I think tree squirrels are lovely creatures, but I also know they are rodents who can do great damage. They should not be unilaterally protected. That is ridiculous. We don't have tree squirrels except in the cities big enough to have large parks. We have too many ground squirrels and they dig holes everywhere, even in the middle of the paved streets! I used to give them rat poison to get them out of my yard.

My daddy hunted and ate them. Sometimes he'd take me with him. He'd let me have the tails if I helped skin them. All I had to do was hold their back feet. Yuck! I have a cat who goes outside and brings me a rat every once in a while. Last year he killed a whole family of pack rats. My ex is terrified of rats. I had fun watching him jump up and down and scream like a little girl! lol

Protecting rodents without sufficient predators to thinning the herd is foolish. The rabies carriers are a threat to human and domestic animals healty and safety..

6 daily bag limit . 12 possession limit. The squirrels have gotten so small here thiugh it hardly seems worth the trouble. I believe it's because of the drought and lack of adequate forage.

A) My family used to have a Pet Squirrel named "Bee-Bop" . . . B) I have been bitten by a Wild Squirrel . . . C) I have eaten my weight in Squirrels . . . Cat Squirrels were almost always Fried as Chicken . . . and the Larger Fox Squirrels were usually made with Dumplings . . .But some of the smaller Fox Squirrels might have been fried as well. On a windy day it is best to just get near a big Oak Tree and watch . . . Be patient. For a challenge, use a .22, but a 20-Guage is just great . . . Or even a Browning Automatic 3-Inch Magnum . . . I don't think you want to shoot "Fours" because it might tear-them-up too much. Bon'a Patit!! . . . So, what are you planning to do, now? . . . Lock me up!!!

Gene Vincent's Song was playing on the radio when my brother looked out the window and saw Bee Bop looking back at him (two-story roof of our house); and that is when we just adopted a pet . . . Probably someone's pet Squirrel . . . Bee Bop ran around our house and always liked to return to his cage with things to play on, and eat cracked Pecans that at that time grew wild on trees all throughout Texas . . . So Bee Bop always had plenty to eat. It is our belief that the dogs killed Bee Bop though; as we could not phathom that he would jump-ship on us, too, and never return for cracked Pecans and Love.
