If you were on anti-depressants, would you admit it or would think it was a stigma?

There is, unfortunately, a stigma attached to those who suffer from depression, or indeed any type of mental disorder. I suffer from depression, but (at least right now) it's manageable enough that I don't need anti-depressants. This may change in the future. I've already been to some pretty dark places in my life.
I would definitely admit it though. If a person is going to judge me based on my disorder or medication that I may be taking to help me with that disorder, then it says more about their ignorance than it does about me.

I would admit it as I do admit other things people tend to view as a stigma.
I think it's important for people to learn that depression and mental illnesses are first and foremost illnesses, just like physical illnesses. They're treatable and it's important to get yourself help and not be ashamed about it.

I'm suffering from depression since I was 7 and have been to therapy and also have been on anti-depressants through the course of my (not-so-long) life. I don't believe I need to be ashamed about it and won't let other people tell me I ought.

There IS a stigma. To people who are not related to, or unaware they are related to someone struggling with a mental disorder, depression and other disorders/illnesses are stigmatised. Most people don't understand who much a mental disorder, especially depression, affects the person who is suffering. I wish more people understood.

I'm on anti-depressants. venlafaxine for bipolar2. and lithium which is a mood stabiliser. and dexamphetamine which is a central nervous system stimulant for ADD. it doesn't feel to me like there's any stigma at all. even though it's still pretty widespread. I don't care who knows. the only shame involving mental illness is the ignorance that still surrounds it and the lack of facilities available to those who suffer from it.

Me too. It's just a disorder like any other you'd seek treatment for. The stigma associated with it is perpetuated by those who have no experience of it - my family totally understands when/if I occasionally have a melt down. It's an illness, it's treatable, and it's not contagious.

I'd admit it to some people and not to others. In general, I try to keep private life in its place and other "lives" in theirs.

I take Zoloft and have no problems admitting it. I have suffered from clinical depression since my Daddy died three years ago. With medication I don't spend the whole day crying and am able to enjoy life again.

I've been on antidepressants of one kind or another for about 30 years. Depression began in my late teens and I've suffered ever since. No trigger for it either. It's just the way I'm wired, I suppose. I need a little help from medication, I receive it, I'm ok (most of the time!).

Well, considering I've been discriminated against before by people who found out I was on them, I must admit I suspect there is a stigma against people with depression.

There's no need or point to advertise such a private matter outside of some very specific sorts of relationships, like, say, serious *relationships,* or if one is first going on them and they're the kind that can make one go suicidal before they kick in or the dosage is wrong.

I've been on anti-depressants before. I've told people close to me. No stigma. Most seem to understand right away. A find lot of people who don't take anti-depressants have considered it.

There still is a negative attitude among people with depression and/or other mental distress issues. I have tried one, but I get heart palpitations so I can't take this particular drug. Now, I don't take any.

It's personal, and yes it does have a stigma. I am on anti-depressants and I have only told a few close family members. No one else needs to know. I tell people that my medication is for ADD.

I talk about my bi polar quite often. It's nothing to be ashamed of whatsoever. And it's important to discuss, because so many still don't understand mental illness and they feel like it's their fault when it isn't. It's a chemical imbalance...a physical thing, just like any other illness you can have.

I think the more we talk about it, hopefully the more accepted it will become, and the perceived stigma will become less. We can only hope...

I know that will happen. One reason it's so important to talk about. The more people understand and know when others have a mental illness, the more it will be de-stigmatized.

I rarely tell people that I'm on medication of any kind unless of course it's my doctor. Most of my friends don't even know what anxiety is. Some of my TEACHERS need a definition when I tell them.

I would admit it. I've been on them in the past. This was years ago, before doctors believed in medication-resistant depression; when they just threw one after another at you.
