If you lost your job, would you take a job below you while looking for another job, or would you take the unemployment for up to 75 weeks?

I would take any job if it meant staying active in the job force.

I'm lucky enough to have a job that is in high demand. As long as I don't lose my nurse's license I shouldn't ever be in that boat.

I actually was laid off about 6 weeks ago and have yet to find employment or receive unemployment. I don't really want to take to huge of a pay cut, but I did get severance pay and should be alright for a few months. I have been getting about one interview a week but no job offer yet. I should also get unemployment soon (haven't yet because of severance). I have applied and interviewed for jobs that pay less but one of them I didn't get because of it. I think that they would rather higher someone they do not have to worry about leaving right away because they know I can find something better.
BTW I don't consider unemployment a handout. There is a reason employers pay unemployment insurance and I don't see anything wrong with it going to those who were working and cannot find work because that is what it was set up for.

Some people have kids and if they were making 100K, 75K a year I doubt a job paying 20K a year would suffice.

Its what I'm doing anyway. I earned a degree in Office and Computer Technology and since I couldn't find a job in that field I took a job in one of the local stores, but I'm still looking for an office job.

This is a good question since many people wrestle with it.
Yeah you don't want to be a sponger, and might take something shortterm, bit does affect your resume. When employers see youworking at Home Depot for a year when you used to manage a department, they suspect you weren't a good manager.
