If you lost your job, would you take a job below you while looking for another job, or would you take the unemployment for up to 75 weeks?

I would take any job if it meant staying active in the job force.

I'm lucky enough to have a job that is in high demand. As long as I don't lose my nurse's license I shouldn't ever be in that boat.

I had to put undecided because I have never been unemployed since I have had my own businesses since I was 12.

Haven't had a job since '08 because I refused a promotion that required full time. My disabled daughter needs supervision while my wife and I work, but it cost me a dollar more an hour than what I grossed, from the time I'd leave for work 'til the time I got home.
Sorta counter productive huh. So my heartless bitch boss terminated my employment without just cause. I collected UC for a while, but it wasn't worth the wear and tear on my truck to go on futile job searches for jobs that aren't there.

It would depend if commuting outweighed the cost of the payment. It makes no sense to work for minimum wage if it's going to cost a tank of gas to get there. It would also depend on whether it would even be offered since it seems that the big excuse for not hiring long time laid off workers is that they are overexperienced.

To me it is often the job and not just the pay. Plus I do not see unemployment as a hand out. I have paid into it for decades

If I'm on unemployment at least I'll have the ability to spend more time looking for a better job rather than working for less pay and not having any time to search.

Simple math. It's whatever will best support me/my family. My kids not getting what they need vs. my pride/work ethic. I'm being realistic and honest. Than God I've always been able to avoid unemployment....but still.....

The problem is most people take the money but that is ignorance because what happens when unemployment runs out and you have no job again!

And have over the past two years. I've finally landed a stable full time job but have 3 part time jobs that always call me to fill shifts - so I'm making more money now than ever and have more contacts and connections than ever.

When you know what it is like to be poor, you never want to be there again....when you know what it is like to be proud doing the best at even a trivial job, and be able to walk away and know you earned each dime, it is empowering. I feel that IF someone truly has a problem getting hired, that's sad....but SOMETIMES it says something about how they "work" with others, or how they portray themselves. If I was desperate, I'd accept the handout, but if I am able to sit at home, on my Iphone or computer, wasting the day away, watching tv, I don't think that's what unemployment was for...and let's face it, a lot of people are not REALLY looking that hard, and are in essence, "getting paid" to do nothing. I don't think that is right when our country is on the verge of being owned by China. I am a dem, who does see a value in social programs, but this mentality of "give me it, I'm entitled", is just not sustainable. People better wake up, because this comfy stuff will come to a shocking stop WHEN China decides to STOP lending us the TRILLION dollars ABOVE what we make in Gross Domestic Product that we put out. When that stops, ask yourself, Where will they cut? Then ask yourself, if you contributed to the mess.

I'm sorry if you perceived my question negatively. But the problem we are facing is too many people- like with the housing market- taking "advantage" of tax payer funded programs when they didn't "need" to. IF everyone who didn't NEED these programs continued with their contracts, worked at jobs that gave them a better chance of getting rehired instead of being "labeled" as having a poor work ethic in the job market, don't you think the jobless numbers would be different, the housing market wouldn't have crashed as hard as it has, and social program funds would be as strained as they are? People don't "get it". "Disability" and "unemployment" if taken when not needed, takes it away from legitimate cases, and puts are country in a much worse situation. Truly, Obama followers, not "being the we" in "yes we can", has hurt Obama's numbers-- but he created the mindset that the safety net is for everyone without considering the impact on the worker when they go into interview, but haven't found a job in 70 weeks! When EVERYONE is doing it, it HURTS the economy-- which HURTS those not working in return! Again, people don't get it.

if by "taking a job "below you" you mean substantially beneath your previous salary the answer is "no." Looking for a job is a full-time activity in the current conditions- even if you could find a full-time job for which you were over-qualified for, working that job would seriously curtain your chances of finding a replacement job at the pay level to which you are accustomed. You'll become trapped in a lower-paying job

unemployment is NOT a hand-out it's an insurance program that is 100% funded by employers who pay taxes on wages paid to employees.
