I assume you literally mean "thing" cause besides my animals ( which are not things ) I would take my purse because it contains needed info and the card to get my money out of the bank and it contains my car keys also.
other than my dog obviously, probly my phone honestly. that way i could call around and get everything straightened out in case a fire burnt it down or something
Besides my dog, or making sure the rest of my family got out as well.(I don't see pets and people as "things") I'd probably grab my Gunslinger Girl bag (It usually has my Sketchbook my notebook, my Emilie Autumn book, and My iPod) But hey they all in my bag, so I'd only be grabbing one thing. xD Loop holes.
My book collection was an issue around here. Small house, BIG reader. then, I got a Kindle. Fit's ALL my books.....PLUS! Yeah, I'd have to grab my kindle.
I don't shelve all the books i obtain, only those i will be rereading or use for reference. I have over 1700 books on my Kindle, of which only 20 or so are fiction.
I'm just an old bookworm. I have things like thesauruses, dictionaries in a few different languages, Roberts Rules of Order, Federalist papers, the Constitution, 2 different Bibles, the Qu'ran.......all kinds of stuff.
My dog. I love her dearly, and she loves me too. I wouldn't let her burn in the flames.. I couldn't. This is considering my family is out of the house.
The key here is to not hoard >:I Gotta be modest.
