Say thank you or write a thank you note expressing gratitude for their kindness in thinking of me, put it on a shelf, and a couple of years later give it to charity.

    Sometimes I regift; I know that's bad.
I donate alot too, so if I keep the item too long, I take it to a donation box.

That is before I return it or re-gift it - Until then it goes on the shelf in my closet. Once it's mine I can do what I want with it right? :)

Personal items that have meaning will always be cherished. Those usually stick with me forever.

I once re-gifted something right back to my sister in law. It was an awful blow to her. That ended re-gifting, because I can't remember who gave what after a while.
Then there was the time my dad gave me two large oil paintings (needless to says not to my taste at the time). When he would come over I would drag them out from under the couch and hang them. Once, I forgot. He asked me where they were, and I said my boys played ball in the living room some times, and I had taken them down not to get damaged. He knew better, and said I didn't have to worry and he took them back. I was relieved, but felt terrible about being so picky. It is a dilemma for everyone at times, I guess. Good question.

I thank the person who gave it to me, since it's the thought that counts...Then I'd try to find someone who wanted it, if I couldn't exchange it. If no one wanted it, it would become a donation somewhere.

It depends on what it is. If clothing, I can always say it doesn't fit and take it back, jewelry I do not regift ever as the giver will expect to see you wear it on occassion.Anything else, I will stash somewhere and always say thank you.
