I think it would have to be greed. The bulk of the issues in the world - poverty, hunger, pain, suffering - these usually happen because the people in charge take and take and take and give as little as possible.
In the countries where hunger is a large concern (to those outside), the ones that run the country tend to be fat. At the very least, they are well fed, while children starve to death in the squalor just beyond their walls. Imelda Marcos is a great example of greed gone wrong. She had 2700 pairs of shoes and countless pieces of expensive jewelry while her country starved. And she didn't see anything wrong with it.
Greed would have also saved our own country from our economic issues. Greed played a large part in the gutting of the regulations keeping the banks in check, making the loopholes in the tax code that benefit so many on top, enabling the tax breaks for the richest among us, all while paring down the services to the poorest of us, and raising the burden on the middle class.
Greed is a pure evil, and if I could remove it from the would, you better believe I would.
Honestly I'd be afraid to change it in any way because I'm all too familiar with "the road to hell paved with good intentions"... and of one thing I'm very sure, I'm not omniscient.
