1, you learn from your experiences, good or bad.
2, just because I've forgotten it doesn't mean other people have. By remembering the bad things I know not to bring them up in front of other people who might have been there.
On top of that, what if you forgot the memory, but, there were friends who didn't. What if they brought the memory up to you? That would get confusing. Do you get to remember the act of removing the memory or do they remove that too? If they remove it, then all the sudden you are missing chunks of memories and your carefully constructed facade will crumble around you the second someone mentions something you don't remember.
