    For two reasons...

1, you learn from your experiences, good or bad.

2, just because I've forgotten it doesn't mean other people have. By remembering the bad things I know not to bring them up in front of other people who might have been there.

Never. Both the good and bad memories are what make us who we are today.

Nope, I have those for a purpose in life. I make decisions on what has happened to me in the past. That would be stupid. Sometimes the memory of pain is exactly what we need to make the right decision now.

Memories are a major part of who a person is. I hate some of my memories. My mom dying without me saying goodbye was always a major regret, however, I would never be willing to erase memories of her just so I didn't feel sad. All of my bad memories are what has made me who I am today and I wouldn't have the good times without them. They allow me to look back, learn lessons, and deal with my times today. There is no way that removing a memory would be a good idea.

On top of that, what if you forgot the memory, but, there were friends who didn't. What if they brought the memory up to you? That would get confusing. Do you get to remember the act of removing the memory or do they remove that too? If they remove it, then all the sudden you are missing chunks of memories and your carefully constructed facade will crumble around you the second someone mentions something you don't remember.

I'm not going to get deep and say every memory I have is what has made me the person I am today. Nope. Not today. I have made bad mistakes in my life. I have bad memories of people, places, and things. Forgetting about them? Sounds like the best thing ever.

Yes, but I already do that to some extent. I have a gift for processing traumatic events a little differently than most people so they end up being just a tiny blip on my radar. I have been that way my whole life. I get accused of being cold blooded because of it. Sometimes, people and events, if merely unpleasant, I forget about completely and someone will say to me things like 'Don't you remember? You were right there!' LOL! No.

Everything you go through in life shapes the kind of person you are. Sure, you have biology but you also have experiences. The memories you make made not always be good ones but if a lesson is learned it wasn't a total waste of time. Memories are important. Even bad ones.

The bad memories have made me much more perceptive and aware of what is going on both in my everyday life and in relation to my world view. I think I would lose some of that ability, and some things wouldn't quite make sense to me having an incomplete context, if I lost those memories, and I would probably make some of the same mistakes again.

I could see why you would want to erase some memories, but if it were not horribly tragic where it was effecting the rest of your life in a negative way, I would keep all of them. Your experiences help frame who you've become.

No matter how bad something might be that happened to you and you want to forget about it, the bottom line is that you are the sum total of your experiences, good or bad. That is also how we learn and evolve and keep from making the same mistakes.

You're right, that's the give and take of some bad memories. There always seems to be some good come out of even the worst situations, so I guess you have to weigh them personally.
