If you are walking down the street and this guy in a truck pulls up and tells you to get in, what would you do?

Once, when I was a teen, I walked down along a country road in a winter night, maybe around 6 - 7 p.m. after school.
At that time, the news informed about the murder of several young girls in the region, and they suspected a car or lorry driver.
A smaller lorry or truck stopped at my side (it was in England), and the driver asked me if I wanted a lift. I answered very politely that I was arriving at the place where I was staying (and that was true). The man insisted, but I kept out of reach, pointed with the arm to the roofs of the houses nearby, told him again politely that he was very kind but that I had arrived and turned into the alley leading to the houses. The druck driver seemed sorry and drove away. I informed of course the family with whom I was staying, but I could not give much information, as it was too dark to see the face of the driver and make a proper description - as I kept at safe distance.
What could possibly go wrong?
hop in
if he doesn't
call the cops
In the opposite direction, into someone's yard if necessary. Then I would probably call the police to let them know there was a guy in a truck telling people to get in.
