It is more about the inability of society to prioritize what is important, coupled with a seriously distorted sense of entitlement and tied to an insatiable desire for instant gratification more than a reflection of the economy.

Things are not as tough as the party of 'No' wants us to believe. They are doing all they can to make President Obama a one term president at great expense to our country. They are really afraid of loosing their control of our government.

For the same reason the latest Michael Jordan shoes that cost an astronomical amount of money always have people fighting over them the first day they are released. Conspicuous consumption.

Some people will always have the latest things. I wonder how many of these purchases and backorders are overseas. IMHO, if people have worked and saved the money to get these gadgets, more power to them. It's not their responsibility to support others.

..............My thought is that when someone has cash money in Their pocket, handbag, or wallet ..........especially the occupy and unemployed, They feel the justification to impulsively spend that money on the latest electronic gadget, and not be thrifty to save it by putting it in a savings account.......like people have mentioned previously........." Don't Let That Burn a Hole in Your Pocket " .........it's all very foolish, seeing I have to watch every coin I spend, for necessities...........

It's confounding. As soon as a new technological product reaches the market, it is already obsolescent. I don't see the point.

You don't have to be rich to afford an i-phone. I know of a woman who has never worked a job in her life , is on every government program she can use with 6 children and although she can't afford an I-phone she CAN afford a mobile phone with 4-G.

Its because the upper middle class and the rich have not suffered from the recession. I work in an very upscale furniture store, and they have been buy like crazy. This summer these same people spent $10,000 to $25,000 on outdoor furniture. So the rich have not suffered like the middle and lower income families.

Please tell me you don't think it's just the "upper middle class and the rich" and the rich buying these I-Phones. If that is what you think you are sadly naive. Many of these are the same people who show up to stand in line early to buy the latest Michael Jordan sneakers and get in fist fights over them, and I promise you they are not the "upper middle class and the rich." Please take your class warfare somewhere else...we're not buying.

Because things aren't tough for everyone. For every family who doesn't have enough to eat, there's one wasting money on buying the new iphone for every family member. Those families should be helping out other families in need, not giving money to Apple.

Not really, I know middle class guys and gals with iPhones. If having the latest technology is important to you it's often possible to get it- and yes some of the people I know are students who are not supported by their parents or the government.

Its a status symbol, nothing else. The initial cost and monthly maintenance charge adds up. It is one thing to use the capabilities of such an item but most people have really no idea of what it can do. So its an expensive toy. Having the latest and greatest is for marking yourself status wise.

Rich people, some people sell their old phone to buy a new one, their company pays for it, their cellphone plan pays for it, they skimp on other necessities or they live above their means.

The iPhone is not that expensive- it functions as a computer basically- as well as a phone, mp3 player and a camera. If you want a better deal go for the iPod touch or get an older generation iPhone. I don't always have to have whatever is new on the market.
