If a individual (or individuals) enters a home, knowing that it is occupied, chances are that they are not there just to commit a common burglary.
Although laws vary from State to State, most States have a “Castle Doctrine” that covers use of deadly force.
In the State of TN we have the following.
T.C.A. 39-11-611, or what we commonly refer to as the Castle Act.
http://www.state.tn.us/sos/ac...
Basically it states that in your own dwelling, if you feel threatened or you believe that anyone who is legally inside your dwelling, is being threatened to the point of fear of bodily harm, deadly force is justified.
For those who believe they can some how subdue a subject until the Police get there, I can only tell you that most the time that is a fruitless effort (especially if that subject is high on drugs), and we usually end up arriving at scenes like these.

We would much rather arrive on the scene where the family is safe, and the intruder is in need of EMS.

"Gun control" survives as an idea because most Americans believe one single myth:
"You don’t need a gun because the police protect you from crime."
If you don’t know exactly why that statement is a lie, then you cannot destroy "gun control."
If you can’t effectively rebut that statement, then you cannot make the strongest positive case for private firearms ownership.
Anti-gun lobbyists get away with proposing to completely disarm the citizens only because most citizens just assume the police will protect them. That assumption is false. The police cannot protect everyone -- in fact the police usually have no legal duty to protect anyone.
[The JPFO's book] *Dial 911 and Die* proves this fact. For nearly every American state and territory, this book shows how the police owe no legal duty to protect individuals from crime. The police in most places do not even have to come when you call.
Gun prohibitionist lobbyists, politicians and media have sold Americans the myth of police protection. Schools teach youngsters to "Dial 911." There was a television program with "911" in the title. Government authorities and media pundits never told Americans about the dark side of 911. Too many Americans have dialed 911 and died because the police did not or could not help them.

The home page is a bit frenetic, but the Web pages of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO) comprise a very effective aggregation site for information on and support of the unalienable individual human right to keep and bear arms.

How many do you think died while wating for the cops to arrive?
I would if it were an adult who became aggressive or seriously threatening, but even then I'de prefer to let him live.
Knowing some of MY granddaughters, I'd pity the fool....
Big news flash.
Nah. My youngest granddaughter just turned 7, and she's remarkably even-tempered and equitable, though I wouldn't risk crossing her.
Tallest kid in her class, too. Wait a minute; I'm sure I've got her school picture somewhere here in my wallet....

(that's my opinion and your opinion can't change that, so save the annoying reply.)
Your idiot failure even to look up the definition of "murder" is wonderfully contemptible.
God send that all the other enemies of our republic should be as incompetent, lazy, and stupid as you're proving yourself to be.
I don't need to look up a word I understand perfectly well.
The fact that you are trying to bully and hurt me through insipid insults only reaffirms your lack of character. That's all you have--to try to tear people down. That's beyond pathetic--so have at it. Your opinion means less than nothing.
I'm sure that this is the longest conversation you've ever had with a woman, but I must take leave of your company.
"As for your idiot's noise about my assessment of your ludicrous presentation in this forum, I'm sorry you were incapable of appreciating the trenchant literacy and ingenuity of my writings. "
Hilarious! Seriously--you are really over-compensating!
You can tell you've won the exchange when they abandon even the pretense of argument and do nothing but whine about how nasty you are.
