OMG this is such a pet peeve of mine. I go out of my way to let people merge and 1 in 10 usually wave a thanks. Truckers on the other hand almost always give me the blinking taillights when I let them come over. I know where that comes from though since I used to drive big trucks in the military.

sometimes i do sometimes i don't... down in Miami where i live it really doesn't make a difference on how much better people drive. so giving a thank you wave is really only a waste of time in Miami...

This isn't about making better drivers, it's about courtesy. If it's a waste of time to give them a thank you wave, then it's a waste of time for them to have allowed you to merge in front of them in the first place. Doesn't matter where you live, can't use location as an excuse for bad attitude & bad manners.

well in the town i live it its just an everyday thing to wave and say hi anyways, even if it has nothing to do with letting them pass, when i lived in la though, hmm, yeah, no one does that, u get the birdy instead.

I live in SC. We wave to people comming from the other direction as well as let them in. Up north if you try to merge in they speed up to block you. I say nice try i continue to merge they better have brakes.
