I have a few questions about religion....

BurntMuffin 2012/08/19 02:36:32
I am an atheist, as are my parents. I was never introduced to any Gods or anything, however religion has interested me for a while now.

Here's a few things I wanted to ask religious people!
I wont argue I'm just curious.

1. How did you get involved with your religion? (Did you parents teach it or did you find it on your own?)

2. How has it affected you? (Positively I hope! Give some examples of ways it affected you.)

3. What do you think of other religions compared to yours? (and what do you think of Atheists?)

You!

1.) My mother joined THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS when I was 3 and my brother 5, though we weren't baptized until we turned 8. So, some would say that we had been raised or brought up in the church, though it was a conscious decision to choose to be baptized, even at 8 years old.

2.) The church has taught me invaluable life lessons, and made me comfortable with who I am, even if some other members are not. I have had ample opportunity to walk away from the church in my short life time, but I feel the happiest in my faith, and doing what I love, serving God. It has brought me knowledge that has saved more than just my life at times, and it has brought joy to my soul like I know nothing else ever could. I bare my testimony to you in this, that I believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the true church of God. Oh, and we are more commonly known as mormons.

3.) The church teaches us tolerance and acceptance of all Beleifs and Life style choices, so long as they do not destroy life. I know that their are many in my faith who struggle with this, and some who out right deny it. I have met them. They give the rest of us a bad reputation. Not everyone, however, is like that. I for one see no trouble with anything. I'm pretty laid back,...

I'm pretty laid back, and I don't recognize skim color on anyone (which considering my background is a good thing) and I don't understand the senseless discrimination everyone seems to want to throw out. I admit, having The Lord in my life this whole time, I do not understand it. I have met and have had friends who are atheist, but it simply does not compute.

Anyway. I'm sorry this is so long. I've been on a self inforced restriction of no sodahead for a little over a year or so, and everything just kinda came out all at once, now that I'm no longer restricting myself... I hope this helps, even a little.

    1. On my own I've always liked studying about religions, mythologies, and different cultures and that's how I discovered Asatru (Norse pagan religion) which had always interested me had started being practiced again.
    2. Not too much one of the reasons I chose it is because it fit me so well and I basically had the same views and code of ethics before I found out it was still around.
    3. I beleive everyone should follow what fits them best and I don't judge any religion especially since I've studied most of em, as for atheists well I was one before I changed and I'm still non-theistic so I've never had a prob with em

I'm a Deist, but I don't care for any organized religion. I came into this by myself. My parents try to teach us Roman Catholicism, but they had also varying beliefs.

My folks took me to church when I was about 5 yrs old.I remember the preacher hollering about sticks and stones and repenting and burning in hell and all that. I didn't pay it much mind.I always did try to do right just for the sake of doing right. Then at about 22 or 23 I was looking at a tree. I could plainly see it did not get there by accident. It was made for it's surrounding and it's surrounding was made for it. I found God in nature. But about all the teachings of the various religions, I take that with a grain of salt.

I was raised as an atheist and was an atheist for the first 26 years of my life. I've always been really inquisitive about the universe, the earth and my place within it, and one day something hit me, and that's if this is all we have and when we die, that's it, then really what is the point? I then did some research on subjects such as philosophy and psychology and found that human consciousness is higher than it's biologically or evolutionary necessary for it to be, and this led me to believe that an afterlife could be possible. After further reading in metaphysics and also in subjects such as biology, cosmology, and astronomy, I began to believe that there could be a creator, as our universe does appear to be "created". Eventually I ended up believing in God and further down the line became a Christian.

Most things have been positive. The only negative I can mention is that since becoming a Christian I've realised how intolerant some atheists can be. When I was an atheist I had no idea how hateful they could be.

I am tolerant of all religions and have no problem at all with atheists. As mentioned my family are atheists. Most of my friends are also. The problem I have is with the atheist extremists who shove their non-belief down people's throats and make generalised statements about religious people. Just because someone has a different belief it doesn't mean that they're stupid. Let's stop with the bigotry.

Oh wow, I feel so bad about when the atheists were mean to you. Atheists and Christians are so mean to each other. I agree to stop the bigotry! Shoving beliefs down throats gets us nowhere...

Don't worry about it. I can handle it :-) I was just never like that when I was an atheist and neither are my family, so it was just a bit of a shock, especially when atheists criticise Christians for their intolerance. Seems more than a little hypocritical. I hate it when anyone is intolerant and that includes when Christians are too.
No one can prove that God does or doesn't exist, so why not just live and let live?

The majority of the most intelligent people on the planet are atheists.

That is neither here nor there. I said that not all atheists are intelligent, and that I know intelligent people and dumbasses in both groups. Once again, you can't help but put in your 2 cents worth to make an argument out of nothing. Do me a favour and NEVER reply to anything I write on SodaHead. I'm losing the patience to deal with the intolerance of ant-theist extremists such as yourself.
