My father lived in India for a while and worked with some Sikhs. He was very complimentary of them, and I have read a little about their religion and culture.
I love Sikhism and Sikhs. They are so loving, peacful and helpful. But when there is a need, they turn into Soldiers and are always ready to protect you.
First Sikh I met was a Sikh man in his mid 20ties. He was very polite, he never let anyone pay, he always paid for everybody and I could see that he does it from the heart. Now he is my husband and I couldn't be more proud, because he is Sikh. His family is very loving, and caring and they call me their daughter.
If you have a chance, do visit a Sikh temple, and don't forget to have a langar (free community kitchen)
And visit to Golden Temple is Unforgettable!
Sikh culture is very interesting. In everyday life, they're very peaceful, generous, and kind. However, when the need arises, they're renowned for being fierce warriors.
Yes, many Sikhs have been persecuted because they were mistaken for Muslims. Progressive Muslims like myself are shunned because of what traditional Muslims do. We believe in equality for women, an end to discrimination and abuse of women and girls, we believe in acceptance of gay people, we believe in love and brotherhood of all people regardless of religion and good relations between religions. We want an end to violence, all violence. We will accept and support the rights of all, even Muslim apostates, atheists and other rationalists, and Baha'is and Sikhs. Please do note that many thousands of Sikhs in India and Pakistan have been slaughtered by Muslims. That is the terrible, bitter irony of them being persecuted for being Muslim. Baha'is in Iran and other Muslim countries have been similarly systematically killed and their shrines destroyed. My apologies for what my ignorant, bigoted Muslim brethern do.
Around 50,000 Sikhs were slaughtered by the Muslim (Mughal) rulers of India (before the British conquest).
"Lesser Sikh Holocaust March 10, through June of 1746 A.D. Seeking revenge for his brothers death, Mughal Lakhpat Rai orders all Sikhs in Lahore executed. With a company of 50,000 he pursues Sikhs through the countryside ambushing and slaughtering men, women and children. In about 14 weeks time, more than 7,000 Sikhs are killed, 3,000 captured and tortured to death. Some estimate 20,000 attain shaheed in the Chhota Ghallughara (Lesser Holocaust).
Greater Sikh Holocaust February 3, 1762 A.D. Between 10,000 and 12,000 Sikh warriors are killed in battle. As many as 25,000 Sikh women and children martyrs are massacred and become shaheed in the Vadda Ghallughara (Great Holocaust)."
http://sikhism.about.com/od/h... I join Tariq in sincere apologies to the Sikhs for the savagery of these Muslims. We have many evil deeds to atone for. As an American Muslim, I am proud that American Muslims (followers of Wallace Deen Mohammed) have always had excellent relations with other religions, Jews, Christians, Baha'is and Sikhs.
People mistake them for muslims, but they are not. Saw them first hand my last trip to India in April. All seemed good to me and I never felt ill-treated or uncomfortable around them.
In my experience there are good, kind and peaceful people of all religions and there are people who use their religion to support violence, cruelty or intolerance at all levels. How people behave is more significant than their religious beliefs. Can we ever really say anything significant about ALL Sikhs, or ALL Christians, or ALL Muslims? I don't think we can anymore than we can say anything significant about any other group of people.
I have worked with sikhs in Zambia and England. We did a collection of prayers fron different religions fur schools in Zambia. The two religions that had prayers other religions were happy using were the Sikhs and the Baha'is. I visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, India, and saw the Granth Sahib. I have tremendous admiration for the Sikhs.
But do not get the impression that they are always gentle or pacifists. The Sikh unit defending Hong Kong died without surrendering and killed nearly three times their number of the Japanese invaders. They were a strong part of the defense of Kohima and Imphal. But for spectacular bravery. read about the Fourth Infantry Division http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... and what they did to the Italians at Sidi Barrani and to the Germans at Monte Cassino. Fourth Infantry was mixed but always at least half Sikh. They are known to be the fiercest fighters in India. Don't forget the leader of this temple died trying to stop the killer with a butter knife.
1.understand themselves.
2.All the religions are asking us to love others. whether it is
Hindu/Mulims/Christianity/Bhu... etc., but we never think about it. Our target is
( we are thinking how to get only money )
I met Sikhs while in the military. I had read about them as soldiers and they are people just like you and me.
Years ago I visited New York City. I wore my Highland Regiment tam o'shanter and a limousine pulled up. It was filled with men in turbans and they asked me if I was a Sikh, most likely due to my swarthy skin and beard. I told them that I was Hawaiian, although I had to wonder if those gents were Sikhs or Hindus as there was violence between the two faiths at the time.
I didn't know about the religion until the tragedy. It makes it seem worse knowing what peaceful people they are. Not that it would be any better if it were a different religion, but I just don't understand what anyone could have against the Sikhs since they never hurt anything.
All are peaceful but as it comes to the polocy of wepon, which we answer these days here that is the basic where the law has to be more stringent, to avoid such freaky incident's. No religion preaches such freaky act's. Where while discussing the onus obviously shifts there. Right Dear !
Yeah, I knew about them. I have an interest in religons and alternative religions. Its no big deal you didn't know about them before, you're not expected to know everything!
I work with several Sikh men and women. One of my anesthesiologists was a Sikh. Many cab drivers in NYC are Sikhs some keep their turbans and beards some do not. My closest friend at work is a Sikh, a wonderful man thoroughly. I love all my Sikh friends, they are all hardworking, smart, considerate, peaceful and so very helpful. Some got hassled on the trains home because they had turbans and beards especially after September 11th, many were mistaken for Muslims and went through harassment in certain neighborhoods in NYC.
Some of my best friends are Sikhs. They are hardworking, peace loving people who enhance the tapestry of our great country, the USA. It is unfortunate that due to the lack of seratonin and endorphins in their brains that some individuals are suffering due to capitalistic interests. As a result this seems cause some of the younger generations to lower themselves to violence and suicide as a response to the feelings that they are experiencing. I propose massive public works efforts in order to properly channel all of the idle energy. Idle hands are the devil's playground. Let's get Americans working again.
In the picture you have posted are Hindu gods. Hinduism and Sikhi has got nothing to do with each other.
Things thaught in Hinduism are totally not the same like in Sikhi. Sikhs believe in only one and only god, and they follow their Gurus teachings. While Hindus have millions of gods and goddesses
Nothing wrong with Sikhs. Same with Ahmadinejad Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus. It's the non-Ahmadinejad Muslims you have you watch out for... And some Christians...

along with...
much personal study-
we should all sikh knowledge-
never can have enough-
It's sad that some people can't let others live in peace, because of their religion.
