Hybrid Cars: Do Cars Really Need to Look Like UFOs to Save Gas?

Peter Griffin September 19, 2008 19:22:24

It seems that the car engineer's law is "if you want a car with decent fuel economy, it should absolutely look like some sort of spacecraft"

car engineers law car decent fuel economy absolutely sort spacecraft

car engineers law car decent fuel economy absolutely sort spacecraft

car engineers law car decent fuel economy absolutely sort spacecraft

car engineers law car decent fuel economy absolutely sort spacecraft

car engineers law car decent fuel economy absolutely sort spacecraft

Why can't we have a car, that looks like a car, that is a Hybrid?

All hydrogen cells do is make sure we are beholden to the big companies that still want to control our energy production/distribution. (ie. the existing infrastructure for gasoline/corn ethanol dispersal). They flip out at the thought people can charge their vehicles at home (preferably with electricity generated & stored during the day from wind & solar) because it cuts them out of the loop from domination of the populace using energy sources.

Besides, hydrogen fuel cells aren't viable until 10-20 years into the future, and we need to move away from fossil fueled vehicles NOW!

Perhaps I should clarify. The infrastructure to fuel hydrogen vehicles is estimated to be 10-20 years away. Sure, there will be 200 vehicles available to lease (but not to buy) in southern California this year, but this is a grain of sand on the beach, isn't it? Had we forced GM to continue & expand the EV1 program we could have hundreds of thousands of these vehicles in consumers' hands right now, THAT COULD BE FUELED AT THE OWNERS' HOMES instead of still relying on a corporate structure that has proven itself anti-social & anti-environmental for way too long now.

You comments are absolutely right. History repeats itself with the lease option just like GM did with the EV1. Let's not even mention people like Stanley Meyer that had invented decent technology to power your car on hydrogen back in the early to mid 1990's. People who read this comment just go on youtube and type "Water Powered Car" and see his interview. He even says that he had been offered a billion (with a B) dollars to sit on his technology for 10 years. I believe this would support your first comment about big corporations that want control. In my opinion, the best thing to do is to do it yourself if you want to make the change faster.

They do look cool. Very futuristic. Whenw e look back at old cars they ahd avery different feel rather then what we mostly drive now. I think people will get used ot it. ewspecially the younger generation.

There are some. The Ford Escape, Chevy Tahoe I think both have hybrid options. But, generally, people who are all into 'saving the planet' want the world to know they are doing it so they feel special. Therefore their egos require a stupid looking car to attract the necessary attention.

Find a car like that and have a custom shop totally re-build the drivetrain. It can be done - if you've got the bucks.

Peter, very possible. You can have your cake (Impala) and eat it, too. Eventualy, it will be faster, quiter, and cleaner than this classic Chevy, IF (big IF) we can get Congress & the auto companies to fund technology away from the archaic internal combustion engines, and toward technologies of the 21st century. "Time has come today", as the Chambers Brothers sang back when there were still a lot of these old 'Chebbys' still on the road.

I would prefer the 1955 model with the smoother tail fin. This preference is probably from having owned a 1955 Chevy for 11 years. I would have kept it longer if I hadn't let the body get badly rested.

It they did it for others, they wouldn't be seeking notice for themselves. It's passive aggressive attention seeking.

The coolest would be a vehicle that runs on ammonia, so I can piss in my tank after a few beers at the bar, drive home, and still have fuel to get to work in the morning. That's the best form of recycling a buzz to good use LOL.
