That is not true at all. There is a HUGE chunk of the "human evolution" tree, that they have NO explanation for. They have a pretty good idea when it all started, then they have it traced to a certain point, THEN a HUGE gap with nothing, then it goes almost directly to humans as we know them today. No, they do think humans should be considered apes - they only have HALF of the story - they have no idea what ELSE we are mixed with.

Wellll .... maybe not. It's just a definition. Species are just genomes with fuzzy borders, shuffling along. Some people do class humans as apes, but others argue that we split with apes 6 - 7 million years ago when the Hominin line diverged away from the line that leads down to chimpanzees and bonobos.
