The powerful solar flare occurred at 1:45 p.m. EDT (1745 GMT) and registered as a moderate M1.7-class on the scale of sun storms, placing it firmly in the middle of the scale used by scientists to measure flare strength.

"Great eruption happening on the sun now," scientists with NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) wrote in a Twitter post.

These things have been happening for billions of years. Why freak out now? Just sit back and enjoy nature, what ever you do, DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITH A TELESCOPE!

It's certainly spectacular. If it's heading right at us, I would be a little concerned. No use being scared, there's nothing we can do about it.

Well not really, I just liked the eyes on that dude lol. The eruption is not Earth directed however this active region might have some future events in store.

I do remember the doomsday sayers of the early and mid 70's. And even today, I tend to agree more with that than what is being put out by Al and his band of money grubbers. Beside, I was trying to give an answer with a little bit of tongue in cheek.
