    I would return it.

Yes I would have returned the check. Better to return it as oppose to going on a HUGE shopping spree and they eventually contact me wanting their money back and I not have it.

Honesty is ALWAYS the BEST policy!!!

Not only would it be wrong to keep it, the mistake would be caught and they will ask for the money back anyway.

Grace -- I suspect "thank you" would be the only reward you would get, if that -- after all, why would they give a reward, when they can just put a "stop payment" on the check

Grace -- I read it again, and I stand by my answer that a "thank you" would be the only reward you would get, maybe not even that!

Now if it was cash we're talking about, I suspect you WOULD get a reward and much more than your humble request of $500
  • Grace W... MissQue... November 29, 2007 01:22:41

It wouldn't be a request. Just a token of appreciation. Last year I found a purse with $800 and I returned it to the owner and guess what!!!?

Grace -- my point exactly! It was CASH (which most folks would not return),

NOT a check (that can have a stop payment put on it), and it wasn't from the IRS!

Geez now, did ya really need to give me a thumbs down because you don't understand what I'm saying?

Back to my story... she gave me $500 bucks!!!

    THINK ABOUT IT.

What makes you think that my honesty in this case would not, at least, reward me 500 dollars???

Just because it happened to me, don't be mad because it hasn't happened to you :)

Well, to be honest, I didn't read the article, and the stroy implies that he could have kept it without anyone knowing. If you risked losing money, or being punished, then the chances of returning the check are much higher for most people. But, if you could get away scott-free, don't tell me you wouldn't take it. Like we all know, we're human...

It's not a matter of being noble, it's a matter of up-bringing. I was raised that if a cashier give you too much change back and you know it, give the money back because it's not yours. Honesty is a BIG thing in my family and stealing goes against our spiritual beliefs. I'm not willing to burn forever in hell over money that wasn't mine in the first place. My soul is far more IMPORTANT to me than this.

Heck, I think you would probably sit on the extra money for a few days trying to convince yourself to keep it but eventually sanity would come to you and you would turn the check over as well.

Sorry, that amount, if you knew there were no implications, and the organization wouldn't suffer from the loss, you would probably think differently, but for teh most part you're right, I am the exact same way, but I think more realistically I think...

Say what you want but Dusty you would turn the money in because common sense would tell you that this company would recognize their mistake and would contact you wanting their money back. Legally even though the mistake was made on their part, you knew you were only suppose to be getting a check for $15 and by cashing that check in knowing that the money wasn't meant to be yours... that's stealing and you're not a criminal.

Dusty -- get off your high horse! The question doesn't say anything about "if there were no implications", and it doesn't say its CASH, its a check -- a lot of us may think different about finding cash, but a check is a whole different story -- and you scold Chiquita and say karma "doesn't exist" -- my dear Dusty, I expect karma's gonna bite you in your ass soon.....real soon

    Dusty -- I don't have alzheimers -- YOUR comments to B4Real2Me:

21 hrs ago "if you could get away with it, don't tell me you wouldn't take it (interpretation -- you're a liar)

23 hrs ago "try not to lie, its making my head hurt because you do it so often (interpretation -- you're a liar)

Sorry, dear, but I'll bet if someone made those comments to you, you wouldn't think they were JUST CALLING YOU A HUMAN! Poof, you're gone -- wasted enough time on ANAL WHO LIES ABOUT HIS OWN COMMENTS WHEN CAUGHT!

I said I never called her a thief, I called her a liar becuase she is, she knows it too. People don't make those comments about me becuase I'm not lying to them. I don't have to lie to make my arguments look appealying, facts do that for me. You should try it, sweetheart...
