Lost my mom 16 years ago. In the beginning it's very hard, but with your support systems and time it eventually starts getting better. Time is the best healer.
Breakups with someone can hurt for ages! Depends the amount of time you were with the person and also how far your relationship went. To deal with this you have to hang out with friends and just focus your mind on the good things in life.
Death on the other hand.. well I've experienced 3 deaths in the space of less than a year.. 2 of them being suicides and there is no ''mourning periods'' you will always mourn and miss the person, it's just how you deal with that. If you mourn and drink alcohol then it will have a very bad affect on you, however if you mourn with people around you to care for you, it will be easier.
Don't remember the person for their death, remember them for the life they lived.
Do what I do. Think, think until you accepted the past and then think about what you can make the future when devastation takes a toll on us thats when we really have to fight. repress nothing think them through til you have changed your view turn your tears into smiles turn your sorrow into eager happiness. We will have our sad days and regrets so lets look forward to the good.
