How old were you when you first moved out on your own? This means no roommate(s) gf or bf just you. And paying a your own bills.

I was 18 when mom didnt have room for me anymore so i got my own room in a rooming house I worked nights for the michigan yellow cab co as a night mechanic for 90 cents an hour - I drove my 54 pontiac to school and to work and I paid 30 cents a gallon for gas -a dollar would take me anywhere I wanted to go. I have been on my own ever since - but not alone, 4 years later I married my current wife of 43 years

Does joining the army involve living on your own?
  • RobHom La 2012/04/25 11:53:28

Depends on how you look at it....
  • La RobHom 2012/04/26 23:29:50

I was genuinely asking...I've never joined the army....I assumed you lived in groups though....movie portrayal and all....
  • RobHom La 2012/04/27 01:02:21

OK... Yes we lived in groups...initially as Platoons of 30 or so men, then squads of 8 to 10. But while you did not have to seek shelter all the time, it was every man for himself.

When I joined the Army back in 1967, the most prevalent comment made was: There are two kinds of people...the quick and the dead. You had to stay on your toes...you did not want to come in last in anything, you learned to be a man and an adult...but then you knew back then that you were facing a 95% chance of going to war in Vietnam...

After joining the Army....homelife seemed like a "cakewalk" in comparison.

I think about 24. By that time ended my 2nd marriage, and wanted to live on my own. My dad helped me find my first apartment, and though my dad helped me find that Apt. my parents never bugged me, but they left their door wide open if I needed anything.

Yeah I was too young to know better, thought i was in love. I think back sometimes about how worthless they really were. I'm glad for one thing, I didn't have a baby with either one of them, otherwise I may not have been married to the wonderful man I have now. July 11th marks our 25th wedding anniversary.

And I am not sure that I will. I'd rather like to have a roommate around, partially for company (so long as we had a place large enough that we had our own rooms) and partially to help keep costs down.
