How old should boys have to be to get their ears pierced?

I've noticed lately a lot of boys in my son's elementary school with their ears pierced and my youngest has a classmate in his pre-school who's ear is pierced.

Your thoughts? Is this okay?

I"m not sure of what age, but it doesn't matter whether it's a boy or girl getting pierced. It's the same age.

I don't think it is any different for boys than for girls. I don't really like the idea of piercing little children's ears and think it should happen with adolescence. But if most people think it is okay to pierce the ears of little girls, why should it be any different for boys?

No boys should get their ears pierced, like in their lobes. They shouldn't get other ear piercings until they're 18.

I don't think there is an age restriction. My grand daughter had hers done when she was 4 months old. I imagine a parent can have a son's ears done that young also. Myself, I would rather wait until the child asks to have it done. Not all kids like it.

Well, my grand daughter's ears were pierced when she was a couple of months old. It's become just as fashionable for boys/men to have pierced ears - but I do have some mixed feelings about it.

I thought the male piercing fad was over?
Piercings are fine, but say no to stretchers. I had a friend with stretchers, and every time she played with them, they'd stink. Plus they leave your ears mangled, and after they're stretched to a certain point they never recover.

My daughter pierced her daughter's when she was about 6 months old. My grandson has no piercings yet and he is 10 years old. So, I guess there is still a sterotype to piercings. I think everybody, male and female, should choose for themselves at about 12 years old.

It is as "Ok" for a parent to pierce their 6 year old boy's ears as it is to pierce their 6 year old girl's ears. (Or any other age)

For us it's customary for both genders to have them pierced at a VERY early age. I was 3 days old.

I am a 31 year old married heterosexual male who has two pierced ears. I was in a band in college. I was 20 when I got mine done and the first thing my grandma asked was 'does it mean anything'. I laughed and said no Grandma, I just wanted to look cooler. I do.

I'd let my son at like 10 years old probably.

About 16 without parental consent, and about 10 with parental consent. Parents should definitely not get their childs ear pierced before they are old enough to sensibly decide what they want for themselves.

Why? If you take the piercing out, the hole should heal over just fine. An ear piercing is kind of a low risk situation as long as you don't let it get infected.

Yes, you do have a point i just dont think that a child should get a piercing below that age, even if it is low risk. Also, i got my ears pierced very young and even though i cleaned them and looked after them, i still got a huge infection and my left ear is still slightly swollen to this day, many years on. I guess personal experience is clouding my judgement :D

Maybe you just didn't clean them well enough. I see no issue with a young child getting their ears pierced with parental consent, and included in that consent is a commitment made to making sure the child's piercing is taken care of properly. =]

    O_o

I asked my mom could I get it done when I was 5.

She was cool with it, and I didnt get any more piercings until I was 19.

Also, many parents get their daughters (and sometimes their sons) ears pierced as an infant.

If the parents consent, I see no issue.

Either 16 without parental consent (same for girls), or any age with parental consent.

In other words: as old as girls. :|

    I totally agree.

I had my ears pierced at five, because I asked my mom; & she was cool with it.

My 6 year old daughter's ears aren't pierced yet, but only because she hasn't asked me to get it done.

I'd be just the same way if I had had a son instead.

My nine year old wants his ears pierced, but I have told him no. Maybe when he is older. However, if I were to be honest, I don't think I would have the same problem if I had a daughter and she asked. Which is such a double standard. I am ashamed of myself. :(

That miles ahead of many folks who are not at all honest with themselves.

You're human, my dear; just like all of us.

None of us is anywhere near perfect.

Again, at least by acknowledging your flaws and examining them, you are miles ahead of many others...
