How Often Do You Swear? (It May Be Good for You)

Do you have a salty mouth? Or are you more likely to exclaim "Gosh darn it" than "#%^#*!"?

Scientists from England's Keele University have found that really letting the four-letter words fly can have a powerful painkilling effect, The Telegraph reports.

And here's the beauty of it: If you don't swear a lot, it works even better.

Researchers found that students were able to keep their hands submerged in icy water for longer when repeating a curse word. They also found that the pain-numbing effect was four times more likely to work in the volunteers who did not normally use foul language.

Makes sense to us: We've always thought the occasional F-bomb is most effective when it comes from someone who rarely drops one.

I swear rarely; my parents always taught me that cursing made you look unintelligent. I trying to use substitute like "Go fly a kite" or "Shut the front door".

But I also say a lot of random things like "Buttermilk" or "Freakin gobbstopper"; when I'm mad that make me laugh or the people around me laugh.

My Great Grandma had this saying -- "Son of a Sea-Witch" And my Great Grandpa's was "What in the Sam Hill" I always found that so amusing as a kid, sometimes catch myself saying them. =) My how things have changed, eh?

LOL,,thats so good I think i'll start saying that. It just kills me when people say there parents didn;t make them who they are,,they just becone who they are as adults..People either become part of who there parents or the hate there childhood and become the opposite. I bet you miss them..i just bet.

That's so true about parents and children. My Great Grandparents raised us from very young up until I was around 10 or 11, we'd go spend entire summers with them, holidays etc. I wouldn't trade things they taught us kids for the world. They just loved having a house full of kids at all times. I do miss them so much, wish my son could have known them. They were married for almost 70 years, married out of high-school. Honey and Hun we called them. And Honey loved life for 96 long years. They were fine people, joyful.

Fortunately, my Grandmother lives with us now. So my son will have the same opportunity to grow up with his Great Grandmother that I had. Took me a little while to figure it all out, but that stuff's pretty important for a kid. Looking back, my fondest memories came from the kitchen of their house, there were too many priceless memories to not pass that on to him. And I finally figured out why my Great Grandpa never said too much. lol But when he did -- whew, look out. He'd drop a wisdom bomb on ya. =)

LOL..yep pawpaw's are like that...your lucky to have this time with grandma, mine lived with till 105 and 3 months. She always wanted something to do, fold clothes , craxk pecans , cut cucumbers. Her words were idle hands are the devils workshop. Iknow it willl get hard at times but you will never regret it

Isn't that amazing, to watch the world change over so much in 105 years -- wow. I really think being with the ones you love makes a difference as you age. Once Honey wasn't able to have children scurrying under her feet 24/7, she passed on. I always wondered if that had something to do with it. And my Grandmother, I wouldn't be a bit surprise if she outlives every one of us. lol

You're right, I don't regret a second of it. We need more of our Grandparents as teachers to pass on that wisdom you can't learn in school. I'd like to pass it on one day too. It's definitely worth every minute and more. =)

At home, alone, I'll let loose with a barrage of unacceptable language that would make a drunken rapper blush. But if anyone's within earshot, the worst I do is a Yosemite Sam type muttering.

    I was a Sailor!!!

In 1958 I worked for an old WWII warrant Officer, and like all my contemporaries, swore like a Sailor.
One day he pulled me aside, and told me that if I wanted to advance in Life, I needed to act as if I had morals, and a good vocabulary.

I took that to heart, and within 4 years of that lesson, Went from E4 to E7. Seems like the officers gave me better evaluations. Was it because I swore less? I dunno for sure, but it seemed to work at the time. And as well in Civilian life for another 30 + years.
