How Often Do You 'Pretend' to Work at Your Job?

I don't even pretend, my boss just walked by while I'm on here, "wow you look really busy..." sarcastically haha

Obviously it's just psychological; but still, once I read that, then that is when I thought about going to pee. BRB . . .

I'm usually busy, but if you've got nothing for me to do, I'm not going to fake it just to "pose" for the customer or corporate. I found this was only a problem when I worked in foodservice. Managers love to overstaff, so instead of making money from tips, you're holding up the wall.

it seems like everyone is downsizing these days. now theres more work and less people at least where i work.

Tre is no way to pretend to work. Things just don't hop on the shelves by themselves!

I'm a contractor now, so I have to work, but I remember when I was in an office job working at a computer, I leaned back for a minute, then heard someone snoring. It was me! I'd nodded off in less than a minute...

That is what I am there for and what I am being paid to do. When I had my own business I had no other choice even when days were 14 or 16 hours long. I have always taken pride in what do and how I perform.

Well, currently I work in retail and if I spend any time NOT working it's because there's absolutely nothing to do (including cleaning) - and when that happens I don't PRETEND that I'm working.

Blogs like that one are real shining examples of modern American ethics when it comes to people earning their paycheck, that's for sure! I'm in between jobs right now, but every job I've had for all my life, I believe in giving 200% effort all day, every day. Slacking off on the job is unethical, pathetic and just plain stupid. Standing around, goofing off just makes the day seem longer. It also heaps more work on the backs of the ones who actually do their jobs, I know, voice of experience here. If you stay busy all day, your work hours fly by, and it's quitting time before you know it. Not only that, you can actually go home feeling good about yourself, knowing you earned your paycheck. Nobody's entitled to a paycheck for showing up and looking pretty. Be grateful you have a job, and do your best to earn your paychecks!

dittos on that im the same way i believe in giving my all and if i do take a breather its because i earned it.

With my last job, I had so much to do every day, I rarely if ever took my 10-minute breaks, not because I didn't earn them, I just put myself under more pressure to keep going, as i was never without a long list of things that needed to get done. When I'd get tired, I'd switch gears and tackle something on my list of to-do things that let me sit down for awhile. That way, I could kill two birds with one stone, take a load off, and keep working at the same time. Too bad the company went bankrupt, as I know that the conditions I had at that place aren't the same everywhere, to allow for that. Most certainly, if you're working hard every day, you should take a breather on your lunch and 10's, you've earned them.

I would argue that strippers are entitled to paychecks for showing up and looking pretty.

Wrong, strippers have to work on their routine and 'act' properly towards their customers in order to give lapdances and get tips.

Can I assume that you had your tongue firmly planted in your cheek, even if you didn't mean it? I don't really think of that kind of woman as being pretty, actually. Salacious and smutty, but not pretty. Their work, and the even uglier side of that line of work--prostitution--is not what I would refer to as honorable or legitimate work.

Pretending to work takes more effort to me than actually buckling down and doing my job. Besides, I don't socialize with people in general and I don't work with a computer or any other distractions around; if I'm not working, I literally have nothing else to do. I'd rather keep my mind occupied with work than sit around and do nothing. It makes the day go by faster.

I don't slack off. I just tend to do the work I am supposed to do, and use the time I have left to take it easy. I never like leaving unfinished things to another person, so I try to get things done on time.

I work 14 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I have no time to screw off at work. The quicker I get through, the quicker I can leave.

I don't have time to goof off at work. They've got me going in so many directions I'm lucky if I know which end is up.

There is no time for pretending in an elementary school classroom.

The kids will take advantage of any opening. You'll find pudding in your notes before you know it.

America would probably gain a huge jump in efficiency if they at least halved the amount of management.
