It depends upon how grave the situation is and what kind of animal it is. We had a dog that came down with cancer. We were willing to spend about $50 a month or so for chemotherapy drugs to keep him happy and comfortable, and he did spend his last few months running around happy, until he suddenly died. We had the alternative of spending thousands of dollars for surgery, and we weren't willing to do that, because it's only a dog.

We have had 2 dogs that unfortunately have had significant medical issues over the years. We've spent thousands to treat their ailments. They're members of our family and we have always provided whatever medical treatment was necessary. We have medical insurance for our current dog - it has helped defray the cost of all of his medical treatment.

I would spend whatever it takes as long as she would be comfortable and not in pain. There is no limit when it comes to taking care of a family member and that is what a pet is and should be if you take on that responsibility.

I love my pets, so I would spend as much as I could afford, but only if they would be happy too. It would suck to keep a suffering pet alive just for my own selfish reasons. However, if it was happy with the treatment I was paying for, I'd be happy too.

Of course it would depend on the individual circumstances, including type of animal, age and quality of life. I'm not much of an animal person in truth.

It's not about the $. It's about the quality of life. I would not prolong a beloved pet's life just because I couldn't let go. I admit, it's the most difficult decision(s), I've ever had to make!

Thats not a fair question. After years a pet becomes part of the family. How much would you spend to keep a family member alive?? Same thing..

I paid thousand of dollars for my dog to have chemotherapy when he got cancer. He was a member of my family! He's gone now and I miss him every day of my life but as long as he wasn't suffering and I could put the money out for him to live a good life, money was not an issue. I would have sold my soul for him.

EVEN IF I HAD TO GET A CREDIT CARD OR LOAN OR WHATEVER I WOULD DO WHATEVER I HAD TO TO TAKE CARE OF MY PET. THAT'S PART OF BEING A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER.

Hard to put a limit on a beloved pet. I have spent more than I should have on my animals over the years, but that is part of the responsibility you take on when you decide to add pets to your life.

You value them both the same? or just both don't have price tags? People come first with me even though I love animals a lot.

I don't know. Animals and people are obviously different. I love my cat and I love my friends. I doubt I'll ever be put in some wonky position where I'd have to choose between one or the other. But if I could afford it, I'd pay any amount to save the life of someone -- a biped or a quadroped -- I loved.

katie is a dog? what kind?

Katie is part Cocker Spaniel, part Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She wiggles and dances whenever we come home from being gone. I had a Schnauzer when I was in my teens and 20's. He died before my eyes, not euthanized. I promised him I would never have another dog. 20 years later, my kids fell in love with a puppy. They said, "Katie wants to go home with us!' I said, "Oh no, you did not name that dog!" Of course, they had. I assured them they were not getting the dog. Then I saw a man inquiring about the dog my kids were holding. In my mind I caught myself saying "No way, you can't have our dog!" The rest is history. She is black and white and so beautiful. If you want to see her, look on the poll "Are Evangelical Christians Unkind?" I used her picture there. We had a French Exchange student over and he made us eat escargots (snails). We tried to get Katie to eat them and, in the picture, she is refusing to eat it. I could not blame her. It's really cute. Thanks for asking about my baby!

I can see getting them a little more comfortable but I don't like to see them suffer just because I want to be selfish. I have and will again let them go.

My yellow lab got very sick and we spent OVER $20,000 in vet bills! There are a few people on here that can attest to this! My dog is very special to me and I love him so much. I do not regret a penney we spent! He was in a vet hospital for well over $1000 per day plus 2 surgeries! He's sitting next to me right now and I love him very much! Everyone says he is lucky to be our dog...we are lucky to have him as well!!!!

...plus, what money I could borrow. My pets have always been looked upon as part of my family. At least, unlike some of my family, they show me unconditional love. Marky :o)

I agree with you...unconditional.....they enrich my life like my kids do, only different, I would do anything in my power for any family member, including my pet.

It would depend on the animal. A goldfish not so much, but my rabbit...
is there an ER doc in the house? I guess it depends on how much the
animal gives back to you in the group of love. Fish just look at you
for food, but dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. take on a new level of
    comforting.

When we get a pet, we kinda' make a promise to keep them healthy and take care of them. Pets cannot get jobs and health insurance, so we need to pay for their medical costs.
