I've been to some over-the-top birthdays and I have enjoyed them. I've also been to (and thrown some) fantastic birthdays at the park. There is no right answer, but think about your child first!

I've put together some fun posts on my blog about how to throw a party on a budget, let me know what you think.

I guess my best memories were with my family in same room dining together talking and having fun, the best party was wit friends playing soccer in rain cause we just passed our high school... the best way party for me is to have some friends and loved one around and go have a blast in your own room with them singing eating dancing like crazy..your kid will love that too have him bring some friends and have fun all together everyone will enjoy and you will be the coolest dad and mom ;)

It all depends on which park and who's hosting the party. There are too many intangibles.

Not saying to go crazy, but just don't dwell on the price of everything, just choose something you know your child would love (nothing over the top) and make it happen. there are plenty of creative things you could do to make your kid happy, they aren't that complex. Also, if you can afford to rent a bouncy castle, do it. Those are freaking awesome.

honest if your hitting 3 figures a cake is like 20 bucks ballons like 3 dollars and a cookout maybe like 40 bucks but if you go over 100 presents not included you got either mental issues or alot of money

My guideline has always had to be stay in my budget... I wasn't a wealthy woman when raising my kids (sometimes Dollar store was my best buddy) . I baked cakes (often), made decorations, games, party favors (often) & had the kids join in the prep (it was fun for them), allowed my kids to invite whoever they wanted & as many (within reason). Plus my kids Bday was from dawn to dusk on "their day" their day was honored by the whole family... No chores for the Bday kid on Bday! (that was a biggie bonus for everybody) The Bday child chose dinner menu too, another biggie (even no veggies if they chose). The kids especially loved sitting with me in the morning on Bday, going through everybody's baby picts, (even mine, LOL).

The same standards always applied to Christmas & other holidays as well.

IT'S NOT HOW MUCH YOU SPEND anyway, it's the effort you put into making a special day for your child (within reason). It's about letting them know how glad you really are that they were born & how special they are as a person.

In this country (US), there's too many spoiled, materialistic, brats these days (compliments of their parents). Fair warning to those parents: "buying your children" with expensive gifts & events, does not insure their love, affection & attention when they move out on th...&&

Fair warning to those parents: "buying your children" with expensive gifts & events, does not insure their love, affection & attention when they move out on their own. Building good character in children is not easy, it takes lots of work & energy yes, & it often makes a child mad at you at the time. Well, I can live with that for the end results, Grown children with great values, who make great parents themselves!

    My kids are all grown now, out on their own for several years & I still have not spent a holiday or birthday of my own alone. (~8}[{

I have never spent more than $ 50 on a party at home. And only 1 gift at a time, I did not believe in spoiling my son. Now he is broke all the time because he has 4 kids and lost custody to his ex, and every time they come to his house he feels like he has to buy them each a gift and takethem to MLB games.

It's not spoiling them if they understand the value of a dollar and you have them do something to earn money. Say like wash the dishes,or vacuum to earn an allowance. Life is hard and at least when they r kids they can enjoy it. Who knows what their lives will be like so why not be happy and let them have fun.

my neighbors had a party for their little boy. there was tons of food, a bouncy thing, and tons of toys, and a dj. That all cost some money. Im going to the dollar store if I ever had to throw a party, forget that. lol. Children dont care as long as their cake and chips.

MY BEST BIRTHDAY MEMORY WAS A PICNIC IN THE PARK WITH A COUPLE OF CLASSMATES, ...GRANDMA BAKED A CAKE, AND WE RODE THE MERRY-GO-ROUND TILL THE FIVE DOLLAR BILL WAS SPENT. (IN FACT THAT'S THE ONLY BIRTHDAY PARTY I HAD AS A KID, ..OTHER THAN THE DINNERS AND CAKES WITH THE FAMILY AT HOME.) ..GREAT GRANDMA

But I would say there is a reasonable limit. If you've got lots of loose cash, then sure, go spend 50 grand if you want to.

If their birthday falls during the week, we take the birthday boys out to their favorite restaurant, which is usually some pizza or burger place. I imagine that will change as they get older and I'll be hit up for steak or lobster. When the weekend arrives, we throw a birthday party.

We've had parties at the park, at miniature golf courses, back yard camp outs, the skate park, etc. We keep the guest list at around 8- 10 so we can keep an eye on all of them. As you mentioned, the Dollar Stores are great for all sorts of party decorations. We don't spend a lot of money. There are many places kids can run around and don't cost much.

Depends on your financial situation, as a widowed hard working laborer the park did allow for some very good birthdays. With 6 kids you had better find some cheap way to celebrate or become a "Seventh Day Adventist" and give up celebrating any birthdays.

My Kids have birthdays that are not in the season for parks. It's usually at a pizza place, but last year we rented a gymnastics gym for 2 hours for only $50...way less than even pizza. It was fun.

i'd pay to be left alone on my birthday......

if you don't celebrate it when they are young no need to celebrate it later....... so if you don't want to spend a lot of money don't celebrate it

    but spend what you want

Hey if you got the money it's up to you, if you don't just give things to your kids instead
Of teaching them how to be a kind person, when they are at your death bed asking
About the will, well so sad!

What you can afford without undue duress seems to be the logical answer.

Having confirmed that, and keeping in mind that I've bought 4 figure suits I didnt want or need, for events I didn't want to attend and then add the fact that I love my kids.

What do you think is too much? Not enough?

It's true, you can't put a price on making memories. Of course, you also don't need to spend the money to make those memories. Some of the best experiences and memories I have come from just sitting around and talking. It's true that money does not buy happiness.

I can conceivably see parents on occassion having a celebration at an amusement park or any idea to that effect.

Plus, if you have a birthday celebration by Fourth of July, you can buy fireworks if your state permits it, you can have a huge feast, and then the presents can add into it.

However, anything over 1000 I feel is in the ridiculous realm :P

    Take care,
