Summer is here, but soon enough students will be heading back to school. Of course, it's always a good idea to get as much of that back-to-school shopping done as you can ahead of time, but that's not always how it pans out. There's so much ground to cover, and classes have a tendency to creep up on you. Before you know it, you're sitting in math class without a calculator. Not an ideal situation, but hey. Sometimes that's just how it goes.

Whether you're a current student or the parent of a student, we want to know about your back-to-school shopping habits. Do you always manage to get it out of the way before school starts? Do you have your kids buy their own supplies? Who influences the purchase decisions? Take our 10 question Quick Poll and let us know. We'd love to hear from you!

What I do is go to a school after it's over and ask the teachers what they want to throw out that would still work for me. When I was working at an elementary school there were so many things that could've been used again but the teachers just threw them out. Even in the front office, I remember one of the secretaries didn't like one of the colored papers they got so she told us to toss the whole bunch in the recycling bin but I took it instead and used it as regular printer paper. I haven't spent more than $15 on new school supplies in 5 years.

You will go far, I promise.
Actually other than new clothes I don't see how they can call it PUBLIC EDUCATION if you have to buy all your own supplies.

My husband is a night custodian ( I was one too years ago ) and the things that those teachers and administrators throw out is just mind boggling. There is no one in school in my immediate family but you can find things for home use also. It is really sad when you see how much of our tax dollars are getting thrown away by the school districts ( other than than administration salaries ).

This is probably what I spend. It's the little things that add up. The list that includes paper towels, tissues, disinfectant wipes, etc. that is the real killer. I don't remember my mom having to do this when I was in grade school.
