How does a 40-year-old change professions?

If one followed the typical path: going to college, getting internship, getting a job, building his/her career and then gets laid off at 40, what the hell is he supposed to do then?

Either go back to college and upgrade your professional skills, OR, sell off everything you have, buy a $1,000 car, and MOVE where you know you will find a job. In fact, since you are out of work, look into getting a GRANT to start your own business!

I like the GRANT suggestion, something I haven't looked into. Seems like selling everything off again is redundant, as I've don't that before.

Thank you for your input and suggestions.

I'm 46 and doing just that. There is no good time or good way do it. Find what you love and jump in head first, you'll drown at first, but you will learn to swim through it. I am switching from Restaurant Management to the Ministry. Good luck!

Really scary time...I don't know what happens from here, but it looks bleak. Hope things turn around for the better.

Are you really a nun? My mother was in the convent, but decided to leave. She always remained a devout Christian though.
