Those are the two reasons that most people change, but they do not allways cause change in people, nor are they the only reasons that people do change.
I have changed a small bit do to both reasons myself.

I think it's a combination of both. People also change with age because their mindset changes. Mine has.

In my experience intransigence results from fear, which may or may not be the direct result of having been hurt. I do agree that the more we learn, the more we will improve, change for the better. The truth sets us free.

I think "change" is a more insidious thing that becomes apparent only under certain conditions. It's probably a product of a LOT of things. Predisposition to change,
being the most significant. :O)
