In the US before government food programs, many people starved to death. My grandfather told me stories of it. He lived on a farm and had enough to eat, but people from the city starved.

If you're young enough, you'll get to see another famine in America. Global Warming is scheduled to dry out the Great Plains into a dustbowl again.

People had gardens, friends, fished, and hunted, but they also did without and often starved. That's why the programs got started in the first place.

Americans went hungry, and many starved to death. Sadly, hunger is still epidemic in America, and many are still undernourished, including many children.

Then again, my country has a very long history, I'm sure lots of things happened to poor people... Of course, at one point they were all put in the workhouse...

I'm not entirely sure. Most of our ancestors probably relied on hunting, fishing and farming.

My own grandmother had five kids of her own living in a small apartment in Chicago when the great depression hit. Neither she nor her husband were even citizens but they quietly shared their food with neighbors, going without themselves sometimes. They never said anything to anybody about it so even their own children were not aware of it until years later when a grateful recipient told one of them.

I'm not quite sure, my country has not been around as long as most. I think we probably had charities who gave out food to poor people. At the very beginning though, when it was an absolute struggle to survive, people did starve to death.

Churches and soup kitchens. I remember men coming to our back door and asking for / receiving food. - I know a little about what Stalin did in the Ukraine. That was way too hard..

Have you got any details about what the Soviets did? We were learning about the Cold War in school, and did an exam on it today, and it would he very interesting to hear from a person in one of the satellite states...

That's just an estimate of starvation during the Great Depression. There were other starvation deaths during US history.

In the country I live in now, Scotland, there were several large famines recorded, the greatest of these being in the 1690's which were purely natural in origin. However there were other occasions sadly when they were all inflicted by man. They were due to several forced evictions of small tenant farmers by mostly English landlords during the 18th and 19th centuries.

There was so much poverty in the country at that time no one could help, as the rest of the population had nothing to give. though to their credit many did. The government did nothing as far as famine relief.

By the way I'm English so I have no axe to grind. It decimated whole areas of the Highlands and Central Lowlands of Scotland where an estimated 1 in 10 of the whole population died. These caused a mass immigration to America, Australia, and Canada.

One thing I do know for certain is that back in those days people made garden every year, canned for the winter. Lots of folks kept swine, chickens, and some had cows. I remember that the smoke house was one of the outbuildings in those days.
Many churches had a feeding program.

There were Churches, fellow citizens that helped, and a place to go get food.
And how do you account for the fact that there are more going hungry today than in the past?

There are a lot more people around today. 7 billion and growing. It was only 4 billion in the 80's.

I'm sure there were churches and individuals who helped them. I feel badly for those who are in that predicament, and I'm not talking about those who are lazy and don't want to work.
