I thought and still think religious belief is a matter of choice. Babies and small children aren't able to make choices so how can they be born a religion? This concept puzzles me.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree. I can tell you that my life hasn't been ruined in the slightest by having some pointless bit of skin removed from my body.
And we may all judge to some extent, but from what I have seen from your comments, it seems that some people are clearly more judgmental than others.

That sounds fair enough to me. But keep in mind that I may be judgemental but I judge each person on what I can see in them. My judgement on what people say depends on if what they say is sensible (in my opinion). We all have to judge. I noticed from your last reply that you seem to as well and that is just fine with me. I would be interested in knowing what comments that I have made are so annoying to you though and why.

I'm all for people having differing opinions. If they didn't then this world would be frightfully boring! In terms of comments you made that have been annoying to me. Well, I guess being called stupid and delusional rubs some people the wrong way.

OK I apologise for stupid if that is what I said, I should not have. But I don’t for delusional; after all I honestly think that religion is based on delusion. I have been married to a woman that is delusional for more then 42 years, sometimes I drive her to church on Sunday and we get along just fine, so don’t take too seriously.

I just feel that it's impossible to say that someone is delusional for a belief they have that can't be disproved. For all anyone knows you are the delusional one and they aren't. Understand that I'm not calling you delusional. I'm just saying that life isn't black and white. There are so many things that our limited brains will never understand. There is no absolute truth when it comes to our knowledge of the universe and our place within it.
Thanks for your apology and I'm also sorry if I said anything offensive. My initial point is never to offend, but to try and get people to view things with an open mind. Sometimes I get carried away. I guess that's why they say to never discuss religion or politics :-)

Tel me what you think of this then; Not long after I got to Australia a few of us used to go swimming in a swimming hole at the creek, to get there we had to pass a an asylum for people that were considered insane one of the things we particularly noticed was one of the inmates having an animated conversation with a tree. My take on this was that the guy was delusional. However perhaps the tree was really arguing back at him I think that he certainly thought so. Now you think I should give him the benefit of the doubt because I can’t prove that the tree is not talking to him. However I personally think he is nuts for want of a better term. I don’t agree with you on absolute truth either, there is I just am not equipped to understand it. And it is almost impossible to not upset someone with a point of view, so I don’t try to hard. Otherwise I would not be able to talk to any one that does not agree with me.

Your parents or care givers claim your religion for you and teach you about their beliefs and practices, You are not necessarily part of that religion until you are old enough to claim it for yourself.

But what if the parents or care givers chose to mutilate your sexual organs as a result of their religion. can their god repair the damage or should the parents go to jail for doing it without your permission?.

when your a young child your parents can pretty much do whatever they want to you without your permission. Is it wrong? In this circumstance definitely, should they go to jail? in my opinion hell yea. Will the child tell on their own parents when the grow older and have their parents sent to jail, if that's even illegal wherever they're from? Probably not. We personally do not have that problem where I'm from, but that is horrible.

What you bring up is an interesting point I understand that it would be unusual for a family member to litigate against their own family on most issues. And I hope the attitude remains that way as there is nothing more important then families that are loyal and forgiving of each other. However this is starting to happen these days and hopefully will speed up an end to these practices. As for religious upbringing as such only time will tell if people will ever wake up to the fact that religion damages the reasoning ability of the mind. Get them while they are young and they won’t ever remember having reason in their make up. That is probably why there are so many religious schools.

Yea they do start to feed religion to children at an early age... But I believe if you are smart and search for a better understanding, and gain a higher level of consciousness, you will not fall victim to it.

The increased amount of information available today to the people in the wealthier part of the world is accelerating what you are talking about, however there are still many places where religious ignorance and cultural mores rule the lives of the people in the poorer regions.

If you are born in the US, 85% chance you will become a Christian.

India, 80% chance you will be Hindu.
Afghanistan, 99% chance you will be Muslim.
Thailand, 95% chance you will be a Buddhist.

    etc, etc...

Babies and small children aren't able to make choices so how can they be born a religion?
By the religion of their parents. This is where they get it from almost every single time.

I thought and still think religious belief is a matter of choice.
It rarely is. Most were taught to believe in X long before they had the capacity to critically engage the matter. This is how it happens.

No people usually get taught a certain beleif by their family but they don't necassirly stay in that religion it's up to them to learn about others on their own if their parents only teach them theirs.

It means that the child was raised around the religion and brought up into it. Many religious families push religion and religious practices on their children before they have the ability to say otherwise. So no, children can't actually be "born" a religion, but their family can be religious towards them since birth, which can consequently cause children to be able to say that they followed a set of beliefs since they were born. It actually is a choice, though.

Every child is being raised by a parent or guardian, and are learning life from them. A baby in a Christian family, for example, is perpetually being taught based on that belief system.

everyone is born atheist and chooses to join a religion or not based on different factors. if you mean 'born into a religion' then it all depends on where you live.

That's what I think; kids just are born knowing any belief at all. They might be born into a family that follows a belief system but that kid isn't born knowing them. Thank you.

children are raised by adults who have their own religious beliefs that they pass down to their kids. Unless a child has a chance to grow and expand their education, they will contintue to believe what they were taught.

There's no religion, it called an relationship with God. Everyone is born with some type of passion, and dreams, it's all based on how you use your passion, and if you are following your dreams.

No. Everyone is born atheist. Indoctrination into the various religions follow later.
You would not call a child born into a democratic/republican family a democratic/republican child.
