In the last few days I've noticed that many people make assumptions about who or what they think others here on SH are. We all develop an image of the persons we are communicating with.What if you found you were talking with a doctor, or a lawyer or the person you thought was skinny was actually heavy or the one with the sexy smile actually had no teeth or the one you called stupid was actually a teacher or a psychiatrist. How accurate do you think your perceptions of others here on SH is? And why do you think to you are right? wrong impressions

What they say is not always what they mean. If you respond according to what you THINK they said you sometimes hurt their feelings.
When someone is just a 'funny name' and a little thumbnail, one tends to forget that they have feelings too. Some of them are actually quite sensitive and can be easily hurt. We just need to take more care how we respond to them.

How accurate your impressions of others is based solely on how accurately that person portrays themself on here. Naturally, you have no way of knowing that what anyone tells you is true or if the person is really what they seem.

But can't we sometimes put our own spin on something based on our own experience and be completely wrong. I don't mean the obvious overt behaviors, but hidden ones.

Sure we can and we do. The difficult part on line is not having any of the physical cues you have in person - no facial expressions, no body language, so it's more difficult to determine sincerity. In a way, we draw an impression in a vacuum.

I don't think I form assumptions,because you have so little information. But after repeated small contacts I have developed likes for many and dislikes for a few. I avoid those if I can.

I can only inform and impression based on what is presented to me. It is inevitable that I will form an opinion, just as when we read fiction we develop an image in our mind of what we think the characters look like. The key here is to realise we don't have all the information.

I can trust my judgement because I know what kind of person would be valuable to have as a club member or a political helper, or a coworker or manager, and I'm only befriending such people.
