Hostess Files for Bankruptcy: What's Your Favorite Hostess Product?

Ho, no, say it isn't so! Hostess Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday. But don't panic: Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs and Sno Balls aren't going anywhere -- yet. "Throughout the proceeding, we're going to operate business as normal," Hostess spokesman Erik Halvorson told CNN. "They'll keep making Twinkies." Thank God.

hostess

Halvorson said the 82-year-old company does not plan to lay off any of its employees or close any plants. But we have to wonder if it's just a matter of time before these products bite the dust in today's health-conscious marketplace. That said, while we'd feel too guilty to eat one now, we used to love Hostess CupCakes when we were a kid. Are you with us? Or were you more of a Twinkies person?

Speaking of Twinkies, in 2010, nutrition professor Mark Haub ate nothing but the cream-filled pockets, Nutter Butters, steak, milk and a multivitamin for a month and lost 15 pounds AND improved his cholesterol. He also had more energy, stopped snoring and reduced his body mass index. Maybe Hostess needs to revamp itself as a diet company?

In its bankruptcy filing, the privately held company said that it owes more than $1 billion to creditors. Think you can buy enough Twinkies and Ding Dongs to save the company? Or would you be happy to just let it die?

Well, to start with, the average daily market return during the Bush era was -0.078%. The average daily return during the Obama era is 0.022%.

    Look it up, dear.
Seriously, you haven't given me any proof for your point when the onus of proof is lying on you... I've generously given you an average market return and a chart illustrating the gaps... if you can refute them, please do... otherwise, you're just typing nonsense.

The daily market return, are you kidding, that means absolutely nothing in this Country. I live here, I work for a major transportation system, I do marketing research for the entire Country. Things are worse. Our national debt is higher than it's ever been. Unemployment is higher than it's ever been. Foreclosures are higher than they have ever been. Groceries have risen out of sight making them higher than they have ever been. Gas is higher, taxes have incresed on almost all servicable goods like cigarettes, soda, food products, etc.. Companies are laying off and not hiring.
Do you even have a job yet or are you still in school listening to the propaganda????

I'm sorry, I'm not American. I'm not listening to propaganda, either. I'll admit I was in too much of a rush for some 'quick proof' and didn't stop to check on what impact daily market return had on your economy.
In Canada, the economy has steadily gotten worse since we went from liberal leadership to conservative leadership.
I suppose I was just more irritated at the assumption that the president had so much to do with how well the country was doing economically. I wanted to show Charles that Obama has not made things worse financially (and, in the examples I could find, he has not).
The entire world economy is rough right now... independent of Obama... or Harper (and trust me, I hate Harper [Canada's current Prime Minister], so I'd love to place the blame on him). People just plain make the incorrect assumption that government and corporation are the same thing.

Actually I think a lot of thing contribute to the downfall of economies, which aren't the Presidents fault. Loss of jobs, overpopulation, automation, illegal immigrants, cheaper labor overseas and so on...

To answer your question about whether I'm a student or I work... I'm not a student. I studied several courses in political science and sociology when I was, however (my gpa was 4.0).
I don't work... had to leave a place where I was working as an autism support worker, due to an injury (over a year and half ago). Since I got the okay to go back to work (in September), I have been searching roughly 20 hours a week, upwards to 40 hours a week for employment and haven't even been able to attain a fast food job. I completely understand living in a failing economy, so I'm not writing this as someone who is either naive to the world or privileged.

the “stimulus” has added or saved just under 2.4 million jobs — whether private or public — at a cost (to date) of $666 billion. That’s a cost to taxpayers of $278,000 per job.

I did take the projections into consideration.
Citizens have to suffer some comforts in order to relieve national debt... that's just how it works. I'm envious of how he has worked out finances and I fully believe the United States are going to see a lot more money within their country in the next few years because of his actions and the sacrifices that have to be made right now. When that happens, you will find living costs plummet and employment rates soar. I have actually considered American citizenship, which is something I never would have pictured myself considering.

I always thought Hostess was a chip brand, but I guess they're two different products. Oh well. Don't believe I've had this Hostess brand before though. If this is some of Americans most fondest childhood memories, no wonder it's such a fat country.

Besides if you all really liked them that much, why'd you stop buying them? You are the consumer, don't be whining when they finally do get shut down. There's no one to blame furthermore than yourselves.

Just so you know back when hostess was big we weren't a fat country. That point is mute.

The reason we are fat is because of the excesses and the breakdown of family life. Don't worry you all are 20 years behind us in everything. It will catch you all as well.

Do have to admit Canadian women are hot.

Does that include the UK? 20 years behind America? Because I may state that almost all Americans that are not native Americans are descended from the British, and we have a long lineage of innovation, invention and such. Does that make us 20 years behind?

Hello? Pulls out a map... Canada is here. Moves my finger across the cast pond.. The UK is here. Okay now we got that settled.

Since you ask though. Yes the UK is 20 years behind the US too. Look out side your window.. You all are putting on the pounds.

The definition of a native is born of. So a native american is a person born of america. Since I was born in the US yes I am a native american. Actually I am mostly german with a touch of irish some other country and a splash of Cherokee thrown in. Last I checked German is not British.... Irish is not British.... Cherokee is not british...

You can state all you want. you would be wrong.

I want to say the weight issue is big in Canada, too... as I'm sure you know and are trying to let them know, so I'm not disagreeing with that... but seriously, you still believe Canada and the UK are 20 years behind you? Perhaps Canada was roughly 5 years behind the U.S. during the 1980s and early 1990s, but by the time the internet had spread, developed countries caught up (and, in some cases, surpassed) the U.S., so update your knowledge.

You can say anything you want just as I can. Yes it is an issue everywhere. I am not trying to be elitist yes Canada and the UK are behind the US in almost every department

"Perhaps Canada was roughly 5 years behind the U.S. during the 1980s and early 1990s, but by the time the internet had spread, developed countries caught up (and, in some cases, surpassed) the U.S., so update your knowledge." Before you go telling people that "mute" is "moot" I recommend you proof read what you write. It is nice to know that developed countries are catching up to what? developed countries? Or did you mean developing?

No, no one has surpassed us. In what? the internet? Or fishing?
  • Inquisi... smitty 2012/01/12 21:44:34
    Inquisitve Kat
It IS "moot", when you're referring to a point being pointless... look it up, genius.
Developed, as in countries other than the U.S. that are developed caught up to the U.S., another developed country, as opposed to developing countries which have yet to catch up... you didn't think the U.S. was the only developed country, did you?
Please, if you make broad stereotypical claims that the U.S. is beyond every other country in the world, present your proof. Otherwise, it's no different than making claims that all Americans are fat and stupid.
  • smitty Inquisi... 2012/01/12 22:05:38 (edited)
    smitty
Okies.. Didn't know I was talking to Einstein. Yeah I know its moot, I wrote it wrong. Sue me Chief Canadian.

So a developed country needs to catch up to a developed country. Wouldn't that be the definition of a developing country. Or there must be different levels of developed. Please share me Sherlock the different levels of a developed country and why Canada was a developed country yet behind the US.

I need no proof. I guess if your country ever gets attacked you will go crying to the UK to help. Yeah right. Why is it when every country wants help or aid who do they call first... Yeah right they call the mounties.

Then when you do help the whole world craps on you. They still want that 22 billion though and the help.

I don't see where I said anything bad about the Canadians until you jumped your little jaws in on my little booboo on mute vs moot.

There is nothing wrong with being behind other countries.

Yes I know a few Canadians and they are very pleasant. I am sure they would say the same about me. If you have friends, then you would know.
  • Emily smitty 2012/02/05 11:31:54

Okay, I 'll admit that my sweeping comment on the lineage of the USA is hugely inaccurate. Morse code, televisions, transmission, telephones and many other inventions are of British origin.

And your "putting on the pounds" comment; look out of your window at the highest rate of obesity in the world. And by native american, I meant those descendant from the first inhabitants of your nation. How about you prove that we're 20 years behind? And I mean properly.
  • smitty Emily 2012/02/06 14:27:39
    smitty
You and I both know I can't prove it. This is the internet. You can't prove anything on the internet.

Yeah I know some Americans are fat. I know some are skinny. You can see it happening in other cultures too. It will creep up on you. Give it 5 10 15 20 years. You all will be going the same way. Hence my 20 years behind comment.
  • Emily smitty 2012/02/11 22:31:58
    Emily
All right then. You should state what we're 20 years behind on before saying it; 20 years behind on the obesity epidemic is not something to be offended about, 20 years behind behind on technological innovation is.

Oh wait, I forgot... American education standards are 200 years behind us in Canada.

Seriously, it's not cool to bash Americans, but it's not cool to bash Canadians or anyone else either, even if it is as a defensive response.

If I get bashed I bash back. I wasn't trying to be cool. I tried to be 25 years ago. I don't need to try anymore.

How about before you try to sound like you know something, make sure you actually know something?
I'll re-phrase it for you, since it was clearly taken too literally:

It's dumb to make stereotypical claims since they're generally untrue.
    Was that easier to grasp?
  • smitty Inquisi... 2012/01/12 22:14:26
    smitty
What stereotypical claim did I make? That Canada is 20 years behind us? What's stereotypical? Pick something..

Okay how about air force... How many troops does AirCommand have? Ahh you got that one right around 15k. Nice job. Let's check the Air Force.. nah you were close though... 330k.

Do I really need to go into the tech behind the aircraft? geeeesh.... Good thing some of us Americans and other Canadians than yourself can work together.

Take about generalizing.... got admit you do surpass the US in generalizations.

But aren't a lot of fond childhood memories related to food for a lot of people, fat and thin? That amazing birthday cake your gran/mum made, baking with your parents, licking the bowl after baking, trying to stay up until midnight to have a feast of sweets at a sleepover, so on. All fond memories, all to do with food, but its not really the food; its the memories.
