dad shoots laptop

Yesterday, we posted about the story making parenting headlines consistently across the world, with the headline “dad shoots laptop!”

I consider myself a fairly enlightened parent. We shop at Trader Joe’s, we vote democrat, bedtimes are not heavily enforced, and I generally try really hard to say “yes” whenever possible. My kids are not angels, nor have they yet done a stint in juvie- a crack I hope I don’t regret one day. But I watched the “dad shoots laptop” clip before I read many of the comments so rife about it across the web, and as a liberal blue-stater, I have to say, what is the big deal here?

If you missed it, a man in a Stetson named Tommy Jordan came across a profanity-laden post from his daughter on Facebook complaining that she was expected to fetch coffee, make her bed and clean the counters. This was on the same day Mr. Jordan spent six hours and $130 installing updates on the girl’s laptop, updates for which she was apparently not very grateful. So, when he logged in to Facebook as the family dog and saw the post that was privacy blocked from family and church, he was naturally displeased at his daughter’s lack of appreciation. So he shot her laptop, and told her she had to pay for the bullets.

I’ve seen a lot of hand-wringing about “implicit violence,” “public humiliation” and other broad sweeping judgments about how this man must be a control freak and a tyrant because he had the nerve to permanently take away his kid’s laptop. But in the (lengthy yet compelling) clip, the father also speaks quietly, without obvious anger and with measured responses. But he used a gun.

So what? This is America, and last time I checked citizens were able to obtain and use guns. He’s not brandishing the gun at her. The threat is clearly not “next time I’m going to shoot a person.” It’s a gun, not a nuclear warhead. When did we get so squeamish? Perhaps in England and France the sight of a gun is a big deal, but guns are a large (and legal) part of American culture.

Which leads me to his daughter’s Facebook post. Was anyone else open-mouthed in shock that a teenager expected to get away with such language aimed at her parents? Is it child abuse now to expect a kid to contribute to the running of the household and make a cup of coffee every once in a while? I can tell you if I said those types of things to my parents, I might not be sitting here typing this post today.

So while the methods used by this dad may have been unorthodox, is it so shocking nowadays to expect a modicum of respect while under your parents’ roof? To this day, I profusely thank my mother and father when they give me something or do something for me- does anyone else feel like this kid’s dad is doing her a favor by enforcing some consequences so when she gets out in the world she realizes that sometimes you’ve gotta bite your lip and do things you don’t want to do with no back talk? Were you horrified by the “dad shoots laptop” clip, or would you buy this man a beer?

yes I would, buy this guy a beer. maybe a 30 pack.
Kids need to realize that parents need to be respected. They provided for her, took her to the doctor when she was ill. sheltered her an in return she comes out with this!

I would have done the same thing. we all made it through our teen years with out the laptop or television..good thing we had the transistor and when we did bad mouthed parents we got a whipping or was aked to leave and be on your own..

Amen brother! My child would have had what little she did have removed and would have to have some down time before I even thought about giving any of it back. I wonder how many children realize that all a parent has to provide is food, clothing and a roof..all that other stuff is extras.!!

We are only getting his side of the story. I'd like to hear his daughter's side of it but since she now has no laptop with which to do so I doubt that I ever will.

I think it would have been funner, by the way, if the dad had taken an axe or sledgehammer to the laptop instead of wasting bullets on it.

    lol!

No, I wasn't horrified at his shooting the laptop. I think I would have gone a different route. I can definitely understand his being upset and his frustration at what the daughter had posted. That she felt that way was bad enough, but to post it to Facebook and say such hateful things about her parents. I know how I would feel. My son is grown, but when I was raising my son, I taught him how it works - that I have a job and that I provide for him. What we have in life (as far as materials items) does not just appear - they have to be earned - at least in my world. I always expected him to do chores to help out - that's being a part of the family - helping out. I think that too many parents make the mistake of giving everything to their children - without helping them to understand how the materials things are obtained - so that they understand and appreciate what they have - and that it didn't just fall out of the sky. If you watch the video you will hear the part where she talks about when her parents get old and aren't able to wipe their own rear ends - not to call her -- just who does she think wiped her butt when she was a baby - and did everything else - warmed her bottles, changed her diapers, bathed her, changed her clothes, took care of her when she was sick, kissed her boo-boos -- and has done everything for her to get her to the point in life where she is now -- you get the point. I think she needs a strong dose of reality.

I think he over reacted. He could have made her work off half the cost of updating the laptop as a lesson. The use of the hand gun shows that he's out of control.

While I can understand a lot of people taking a vicarious enjoyment of this incident brought on by the petulant attitude of a willful youth, i'm bewildered that so many would openly condone this. If your child is an attitude case, then you should take the necessary steps to discipline and make a TEACHING MOMENT out of it. What was taught here? That it's fine to destroy property with a deadly weapon, even if it's your own? The laptop was not the problem here, it was the teen in question. Why destroy a perfectly good piece of electonic equipment? If you want to put an indefinite ban on the use of it by your child, fine. But to destroy it? That makes about as much sense as book burnings for the fear of "Satan's influence" in them. Furthermore, this man seems a little too eager to use his firearm to make a point. I'm not for banning guns, but nor do I think they should be used so callously and erratically. Licensed to own or not, this man shows a very disturbing characteristic towards acting out with a deadly weapon. This time it was a laptop, do we really need a tragedy to happen next? Columbine, Gabrielle Giffords, do I need to paint a picture here? If I were the local authorities, I'd get Children and Youth Services involved in this, and start some stringent investigation into ...

Columbine, Gabrielle Giffords, do I need to paint a picture here? If I were the local authorities, I'd get Children and Youth Services involved in this, and start some stringent investigation into this man, his psychological profile and try to get a clearer picture of how much of a potential danger he is to those around him. Sorry to rain on everybody's "hell yeah" parade, but in this age of wanton and unchecked violence in the United States, it's best if we put this man in check before a tragedy really does occur. Just sayin...

You have a valid point..But its the quickness of people getting child services involved is the reason we have so many kids who think its ok to do the stuff they do..like dissing their parents on facebook...I had both my youngest daughters threaten me with DHS because I wasn't letting them have things their way..What would have happened? I would have been afraid to discipline my kids and then I would have thought well hell..why should I even bother..and that is the way it is today because parents are afraid to discipline their kids. Its easier to give them what ever they want than try to stand up for what they believe is right and stand the chance of being a baddie with the kids and the community!! And losing their kids.. JMHO...

Fair enough, Jbug799, but i'm pretty sure you never brought a deadly weapon into play during the times you tried to discipline your children. In this politically correct world, some people feel that any type of reprisal against one's children for transgressions they commit is "abuse." In turn, that gives some youths a psychological advantage over thier parents, as you just pointed out. But let's remember, "discipline" does not always have to equate to "negative reinforcement." Disciplining can be used as a deterrent but in a positive form. Instead of aggression, perhaps logic and reasoning could be used as tools in the shaping of one's children. Kids are not stupid, especially these days. Willful? Yes. Rebellious? Obviously. But if you can relate to children WHY they need to conduct themselves in a certain manner, and not just "because I said so", more progress might be made. But that's just me. Good talking to you.

I'd buy him a six-pack. Way to go Mr. Jordan.
the youth of America are getting a might spoiled and un-appreciative. They have expectations and do not care for rules, parental concerns and such. I just hope he doesn't get her a new laptop any time soon. She deserved it.
and this from an admitted Democrat who I think is probably raising his daughter with lax rules, reasonableness and concerns. As easy as her life is she still went out of her way to do this Face book thing. I don't blame him the least bit...
I just tell you, I'm glad I'm done raising kids.. Today's attitude from kids and how they're being taught at school would just kill me...
