To celebrate National Donughtnut Day, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts are giving them out for free. Every customer gets one free doughnut. No coupon or or purchase is required; just walk in a get a free doughnut.
National Doughnut Day has been around since 1938. It was started by the Salvation Army to celebrate the women who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. Though no one can agree on where the original idea came from, doughnuts are considered a completely American food and have remained unchanged for over 150 years.
Krispy Kreme fell on hard times recently, but announced this week that its quarterly earnings has increased steadily for the last year and a half. Krispy Kreme has actually been in business since 1933, though didn't experience rapid expansion until the 1990s.
Fun doughnut fact: The world record for eating doughnuts is held by "Badlands" Booker, who devoured 49 doughnuts in just 8 minutes. Though no one can out-Dough! America's top trencherman, Homer Simpson.

the other thing is, i think i'm allergic to the kind of oil they fry donuts in... i eat one donut and somewhere on my face a horrible boil breaks out in the next day or two... it took me years before i realized the connection... this also happens to me when i eat french fries that have been cooked in crappy oil =/ i know it's the kind of oil because i eat french fries from certain other places and my skin never breaks out
sorry, i don't mean to gross anybody out, but thems the facts... i still occasionally try a donut from wherever just to see if i'm still allergic =/ i still loves me all kinds of donuts =)
Helm's Bakery trucks used to cruise our neighbohood in Norwalk, CA. The driver would toot on his whistle and the housewives in bathrobes and fuzzy slippers would come a running. Morning fresh pastries, donuts, cakes, breads and cookies were put on display when the man in his crisp uniform pulled on those huge drawers.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm =) lemon or coconut danishes =) i'm drooling
I know I'm a procrastinator....
I could of had one at breakfast and lunch...for free! Now all I get is one on the way home. Dang!
Happy Doughnut Day!
I eat about two donuts at a time - once a year. MAYBE twice. You can be a health nut and take care of yourself and diet and exercise and yada yada...but indulging, from time to time, in the little pleasures in life never really hurt anyone. :-)
