Homeschooled students better socialized, perform better in college?

More than 2 million U.S. students in grades K-12 were home-schooled in 2010, accounting for nearly 4 percent of all school-aged children, according to the National Home Education Research Institute. Studies suggest that those who go on to college will outperform their peers.

Students coming from a home school graduated college at a higher rate than their peers—66.7 percent compared to 57.5 percent—and earned higher grade point averages along the way, according to a study that compared students at one doctoral university from 2004-2009.

Home-schooled students often spend less time in class, Kelly says, giving them more opportunity to get out into the world and engage with adults and teens alike.

“The socialization thing is really a nonissue for most home schoolers,” he says. “They’re getting a lot of it.”

I can see the better grades and graduation rates but i don't think I buy that home school kids are better socialized. I don't see how that's possible.

How do you not see it as being possible? Do you believe that the best way to socialize is to be segregated first by geographic area and then by age? Do you believe that the best way to be socialized is to be herded like chattel in groups of 25-30 peers who are also in need of socialization?

My daughter, g'son and I were all private/homeschooled. We don't have the herd mentality and that's probably what she's referring to...

That's interesting. Since I had to work full time it never occurred to me to consider home schooling for my daughter. I think it's great when a parent can do this. There is so much violence and other distractions in many schools today, that home schooling make a lot of sense from several standpoints.
