Hitler Store in India: Should Government Ban Hitler Store?

The owner of the "Hitler" clothing store in New Delhi, India refuses to change the store's name. The owner, Manish Chandani, said he named the store based on his grandfather's nickname and the sign designer added the swastika. "The billboard company suggested that since the shop was called ‘Hitler,’ it was all right to go with the Nazi symbol as well," said the shop owner. "It was kind of the theme, so I agreed."

Mr. Chandani knew the history of Hitler before he opened the store. Chandani ran "Hitler is coming" teaser advertisements before the store opened in July. The government approved the name before the store opened.

Should the government force Chandani to change the name? Would you want your government to deny a permit for businesses named Hitler? Would you shop at the clothing store if it had really cool clothes on sale?

Not my country, not my business.

And if it were in the US; there's the first amendment and each person is allowed to be as big of an ass as they want, as long as it isn't impeding on the rights of others.

Btw, your bait is getting stale, Feffy.

    Try harder.

It is his store he can name it what he wants. if people dont like it they shouldnt shop there. People have to quit being offended so much, we cant just throw out every name or word that at some point in history was a bad thing. if we did that we would all be mute.

Hey Fef! Looks like you lose again! You constantly show much more love and concern for Israel than you ever do for what's right for your own nation. I know you won't answer this but do you by any chance hold dual citizenship?

The swastika existed as a symbol of good fortune thousands of years before the Nazis even existed. The symbol is to many cultures an important one, representing their history and beliefs. The Nazis, by taking the swastika, annihilated the significance of the ancient symbol. Today, the swastika is to most people a symbol of evil, a symbol of demise, and a symbol of ruination. It is extremely depressing to find that although the swastika is a symbol of life, and symbol of joy, it has been made a symbol of evil, something the people of the ancient world never intended it to be.

I wouldn't. Whatever the government there decides is their choice, though. Different laws.

Since ww2 MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED BY IT !! I am NOT OFFENDED BY IT PERSONALLY !! IT JUST GIVES ME A "CREEPY FEELING" !! It is up to thev government of India ton make their own determination, NOT ME !! Israel has every right to choose other stores for trade !!

Morons start things without researching and should let the "free market" encourage changes. People like and people buy. That is one reason why Obamacare won't work. No one with a clue about the economy wants it, because better things are out there if government would just get out of the way.

People will decide if "Hitler" stays open or is only patronized by skinheads. "New Delhi skinheads" might be a sight to see and may attract business on their own!

Right, why not put his name on a store for giggles. Unfortunately after all these years since Adolf Hitler committed the horrible acts on mankind some have become numb or uncaring or uneducated.

First off, it's India, not the USA, so different rules, sensibilities, and mindsets apply there.

Second, the swastika was a religious symbol in India and the surrounding area for many centuries before Hitler and his goons co-opted it with minor alterations.

Third, even if India HAS a Freedom of Speech standard similar to America, it means freedom from governmental per-censorship, even for unpopular speech.

Besides, it's his business. If he wants to offend potential customers and vendors, it's his business to lose.

Not everybody is offended by the store's name. It has no reference to Hitler. Only certain people see Nazis in their soup.

I think most people wouldn't want to wear that logo on their clothing. This is why banning such things is not nessicary. They would likely put themselves out of business in America.

As horrific as it is to name a store after that Assmonkey, the guy should be able to name his business what he wants. I also have the right to celebrate when someone burns it down. The guy claims he didn't know anything about Hitler, BS. This guy is a POS.

I have to agree that if his story is true (a comedic nickname for his strict grandfather), and he's not a neo-nazi, it isnt a big deal at all. Its a REAL SURNAME after all, and many today still have it if you browse the european phone books, austria in particular, since adolf hitler was austrian. If the owner of this store doesnt get enough custom (or the right type of customer!) then its his own fault, as it was his choice for the stores name. The only thing many will question is the use of the nazi version of the swastika symbol. His stores name with this symbol links it straight to adolf hitler. What many may not realize is that this symbol was not originally a nazi creation, as it has been in ancient india for thousands of years. Hitlers version is unfortunately the one the shop has used, flipped and rotated by 45 degrees by Adolf to suggest power instead of its traditional meaning of peace. Unless the symbol is changed back to the more traditional swastika, or edited for a humorous take, then it will be be considered one step too far by some, but personally I dont see why he should be stopped, regardless of what he decides to do and where his stores might be based. I think attempting to open stores in the 'free western world' such as the usa or eu (especially germany) would cause the most outrage with the public, ironically enough. If I was to open a store in india with the traditional symbol, the store would have an indian theme of peace and a related name. If I was to use the name, I would likely remove the symbol and have comedic images of power instead. Choosing to use both hitler and the nazi version of the swastika, then imagery towards certain members of his crazy family with this nickame might help lessen any public outrage. Update-Ive just noticed that he has already been forced to change his sign, and that he wont be compensated. It would seem that hitler has a bit of a cult status in indias media, according to my link below. He has most likely failed as a result of using the nazi symbol, but at least it won him some free advertising. Its too bad that when he considers a new theme, few may be able to recognize the store: click here for article update

So let me get this straight.... your cousin died fighting in Afghanistan and your brother did two tours there. And you hate all religious and political fanatics, right? And you hate "all religious and political fanatics". And in the US you hate the KKK?

So I still don't get it. You think that I am a Muslim, or a religious fanatic or a political fanatic or neo-fascist.

I'm none of the above. Is anyone who disagrees with you one of the above?

I understand that you are so emotional you must quiver inside. You don't have to feel that way or think the things you think. You can get help. If you need any advice, or just a friend to discuss these maladies with, I'll be here for you.

Well, I handle that, being called an Arab. I'd be proud to be Arab or Jewish for that matter. I see nothing to be ashamed of in either. So, you're a racist, who cares? You hate Arabs, Jews and black presidents because of their race. I don't. (by the way, though better than before, your grammar, spelling, syntax and punctuation are still sub-par)

Before I go... why do you hate black people? Our own president is black, but then you know that... gives you plenty of reason to hate.
