Happy Birthday Pope Benedict XVI! May we all live productive and holy lives into our 80s as the Pope has. But, should Catholics worry about Pope Benedict XVI's health as he enters his late 80s? Should Pope Benedict XVI consider resigning before he has any major health issues?

The story is a chronicle of infirmity: Benedict using a cane on the Cuba trip; wheeling down the aisle of St. Peter's on the platform last used by Pope John Paul II; suffering like many his age with high blood pressure and arthritis.

Benedict knows the topic is on folks' mind and he told another famously old leader, Fidel Castro, last month:

I'm old but I can still carry out my duties.
He'll spend his birthday with his brother, who feared Benedict was too old for the job when elected in 2005.

Many people do not follow teh "politics" of the vadican... I do... When Pope John Paul II put his eye on Benedict he did so with the idea that benedict would be a short term intrum pope. He would be teh bridge between what john paul had done adn teh next step for the HRC as well as teh vadican.... you have to remember John Pail served for an extremely long time and that is very unusual for a pope.
of the 266 popes only a hand ful have served for more than 10 years some served for just days while teh longest post Peter was in the seat for 11,000 + days.

Popes don't retire, they die. Once they become pope, they hold that title until the day they die.

I didn't think Popes resigned. I thought they ruled until they died.

Popes don't usually resign do they? I guess as long as he is of sound mind and physically able he will most likely stay.
