Drink cherry juice. Dr. Oz recommended that. Stop fluoridation, it destroys the glan in your brain which causes you not to sleep. Don't watch the news.

when it's bed time, take a fairly warm-hot shower, then dry off, preferably in a cool place, like in front of a fan, or in the a/c, until you feel chilly...then hop in bed with a light cover, and a light weight nighty.....as your body strats to warm up, it'll induce sleep.

Lots and lots of things to try.
In one Consumer Reports poll, readers cited both sex and prescription pills as effective.
Not all prescription pills are addictive. Trazodone is widely used. Sometimes clonidine.
Herbal/natural remedies include 5-HTP, kava kava, melatonin, hops, valerian, chamomile.
Soothing bedtime music may help. I rather like the "ambient" music channel on Pandora for this.
You might look into rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) for non-medical ways to deal with anxiety.
Regular exercise is good for the body, brain, and mind, particularly for insomnia.

You can try melatonin and if that fails do what I do...drink a few shots of bourbon.

I only sleep a few hours a night. The best sleep I get is when I just give up & I don't try at all to sleep. Then I either sleep or at least I am not disappointed.

I use my earphones to listen to some soothing music after I get into bed. It helps me to fall asleep every night.

I used to have alot of trouble with this so here are a few suggestions:
Avoid sleeping pills because you could get hooked on them.
Next, buy a CD that has the sounds of the ocean waves crashing and the sounds of raindrops. These are soothing and help you to relax.
Like others are saying, chamomile tea works well.

And the family problems, if you argue with siblings and parents try to have a sit down discussion to talk things out.
If you give into arguing and yelling it won't solve the problems., instead it will make you tense and rob you of needed sleep. Stress is bad for your body.
Avoid eating junk food because that takes away your energy and makes you feel run down so eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits and veggies.
And be sure you exercise every day or do some walking, and a good workout so that by night after eating a good meal, you can relax naturally and surely feel sleepy by the time you finally turn in. And a nice warm bath right before bed will guarantee to make you sleepy so do that last and good luck.

Self Hypnosis is very effective. Barring that, I would suggest over the counter melatonin supplements found in any drug store.
Oh And READ AND FOLLOW label directions.

work out or do cardio, it makes you want to rest at the end of the day and releives stress at the same time.

Lavender is a little bit affective. Making a simple story in your head can help.

1)STOP worrying! It doesn't help. (Pray instead.)
2)Melatonin supplement (only use as directed.)
3)Make your sleeping room totally dark if possible.
4)Make your sleeping room as quiet as possible.
5)Move all electronics to a different room.

No. 3) Making your room as totally dark as possible helps me a lot! (the bedroom at my sister's house is facing the street, so I have these headlights shining in my room all night long!!!)

White or blue light disrupts the body's natural melatonin production, thus interrupting restful sleep. It is recommended that all light be eliminated from the sleeping area but if light is needed, make it red and as dim as possible.
