This works at all levels -- During the cold war each side respected the potential of the other side, but did not always treat each other with respect.

That is true, but does that mean that you treat someone you don't have respect for disrespectfully?

When I first meet a person, I treat them with respect, as I do not belittle them.

Once someone EARNS my respect, then I respect them as a person.

Respect is earned. I can respect (a possible synonym is admire) a person from far away because of their achievements or someone closer to home because of their character.
When people say "treat someone with respect" what they really mean is good manners and politeness, I think the two have gotten blurred.

It finally happened... I've clicked the wrong answer. Love how SodaHead locks it in.

Anyway: sometimes the latter is merely a matter of pragmatism.

LOL ~ I can't begin to tell you how many times I was going for one answer and SH gives me the wrong one and LOCKS it in~ You can't correct it either which is bogus~
Many other sites at least allow you to correct it or have a place to report it happening~

Again, you give only two options. What about other?

You cannot treat someone with respect without having some level of respect for them and you cannot have respect for someone without also treating them with respect at least part of the time. Even with friends that you can tease and make disrepectful comments to without lowering the level of respect you have for each other, there is a level of respect built into the friendship.

That said, you can treat a total stranger with respect, but you can only have respect for someone you know enough about to feel respect for them and their behavior.

of course! You can have respect for a position but not the person - anything more than civility and politeness needs to be earned.
