Many times. I think the majority of the dogs we had growing up came from shelters. The one dog we got from a breeder was free. She didn't want him because he was the runt and was going to take him to a shelter. I ended up taking him home with me, and he wound up being bigger than any of the other pups when they reached full age! one of the best dogs I ever had!
I would take all the animals in the shelter home if I could!! They look at you so pitifully... Going into the puppy room was a mistake because they all howled and whimpered and it made me cry. :/ Poor little puppies :( I plan on getting all my pets from a shelter.
I would, but when I tried they came up with stupid reasons why I couldn't. Years back we tried to adopt a sheperd puppy from a shelter in Chicago but because I was working 2 jobs and going to school full time, and though my grandmother was home all the time, because she was disabled they didn't believe she could let the dog out frequently enough. Yet my grandmother let our other dogs out just fine. It was stupid and it made us all mad. We never went back again to that shelter. I was considering a chihuahua puppy recently, and while I had the adoption fee on hand, I opted not to do it. She'd have had a wonderful home with us, but I knew they wouldn't approve us for whatever reasons, so I decided not to get my daughter's hopes up by even beginning the process. Maybe in a few years.
You'll always find the best pet at the shelter. And for $75-$150 (depending on shelter) you get full shots, spay/neuter and sometimes microchip. You're saving a pets life, and not supporting back yard breeders (who have no idea how to properly breed for temperament and health) and puppy mills. People should do their research. No reputable breeder will advertise in the local want ads.. so if you just HAVE to have a purebred whatever- Go through a kennel club to find a legitimate breeder, and expect to pay a pretty penny and agree to A LOT of conditions for being given the 'privilege' of caring for one of their dogs. You will have to agree not to breed them (unless you can prove you know the ins and outs of proper breeding and purchased a 'breeding' worthy dog. Most will insist you never allow them to breed and have you sign a contract that you will spay/neuter. If you're going to go through all that trouble, why not just adopt at the shelter and get that as part of the fee? Save over $1000 and you don't have to be belittled by the purebred elite.
It actually depends on what i'm looking for, My last two dogs are both abandoned strays found near my home Though I really want to find a specific type of toy poodle so I'll be visiting shelters, professional breeders, family litters.
I haven't acctually adopted many, but my family has gotten pets from garage sales and people who haven't been able to keep them...One dog, a degu, a rabbit. And if i ever get a pet of my own someday, I'll probably get it from a shelter, or from someone who got an unexpected load. Breeders are overrated and expensive.
My first dog came from a shelter, best dog I've ever had.
The one I have now came from Siberian Rescue, so I still adopted.
If I was to buy from a breeder I'd have to know the breeder well, know that the dogs are completely healthy, and know that they only breed once every two years (don't over breed).
I've always gotten my pets shelters...shelter pets are usually abandoned or just dropped off b/c of negligence and or previous owners couldn't take care of them. They need all the love they can get. Plus those pets are healthier :)
i hope most people do...i would like to see puppy mills shut down completely...it should be super hard to obtain a license to breed pure breed dogs....we are the ones who domesticated dogs..we need to take responsibility and do right....
R.I.P
Anyway, my youngest cat comes from one, and I will always adopt from shelter in the future
This is Spooky
