I did it in spurts, took me several years but not much was online then. I think now most of it can be done from the comfort of your home if you have some basic information such as names of ancestors.

The Genealogy program will fill all your needs and print custom reports. The paid version will expand on that much further and even allow you to print a book.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not really all that interested and I don't have a lot of patience for the research. My niece started to look into it and she may be able to use your suggestions.
