Have You Ever Pretended To Have Read a Book You Didn't Actually Read?

If you’re a “book bluffer,” you’re in good company. According to the New York Times and a British website called Female First, fibbing about the books you’ve read is far more common than you might think. Research from the Lindeman’s Wine & Book Club revealed that 71% of Brits lie to friends and family, claiming to have read books they actually haven’t.

The most common reason cited for engaging in the practice is fear of being perceived as stupid. The study found that more men engage in book bluffing than women—mostly when trying to impress prospective partners. However, women are more likely to lie to friends or colleagues than their male counterparts.

So what books do the Brits most frequently pretend to have read?

The top five are “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, “The Lord of the Rings” by J. R. R. Tolkien, “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte, “Tess of the D’Ubervilles” by Thomas Hardy, and “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien.

(Hmm . . . most of those books have been turned into movies. Is that the key to successful book bluffing?)

We don’t have any stats on book bluffing in America. However, the New York Times did come forward with a list of books their staff members have been less than truthful about having read.

They include: “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace, “The Corrections” by Jonathan Franzen, “1984” by George Orwell, “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and--ironically--“How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read” by Pierre Bayard.

So what about you SodaHeads? Have you ever pretended to have read a book you didn't actually read?

Technically no. I was instructed to read a book for class, but I stopped halfway because I loathed it. I just smiled and nodded if someone talked to me about it.

Well thank goodness your teacher didn't. I know a girl who was assigned it because it was a "long" book and "long" books made kids smarter, in her teacher's not-so-accurate opinion. In my opinion, the longer that nonsense went on, the more IQ points anyone reading it loses.

I'll be generous and pretend your teacher assigned Twilight so that students could appreciate good writing after they had read Twilight?

But that was years ago - especially in high school when I only read the cliff notes.

I love reading now and read as much as I possibly can.

For a while when I was younger I pretended I had read all the Harry Potter books, but I never did...most of my knowledge came from the movies and fanfiction.

You can always tell the difference between a Harry Potter reader and a Harry Potter watcher by mentioning S.P.E.W.

I know! Reading the books was such an eye opener. Ofc It would paint better visuals of the characters than the movies

I read a ton, and I can read fast, so that helps. Otherwise, I have no qualms admitting I haven't read something. Perhaps if the person asking has read the book, they can give me a reason to as well.

That's a little weird in social contexts. To me, at least. What if someone wanted to talk about the details of it and you had to admit you hadn't actually read it? As for academics, it never really occurred to me to read spark notes...Especially since I had a professor who quizzed on little details.

"What did the man drag the rug across on his way to his boss?"

    Besides, I like reading.

    Sparknotes bby.
There are just some books that I cannot read. I literally had to force myself to read The Scarlet Letter, and it put me to sleep every night. I tried reading parts of "Great Expectations," "Sister Carrie," "Hard Times," "My Antonia," and "The Great Gatsby," but I just had to use Sparknotes for the rest. I'm pretty sure my teachers knew I didn't read them though, ahaha. :s
