Have You Ever Pretended To Have Read a Book You Didn't Actually Read?

If you’re a “book bluffer,” you’re in good company. According to the New York Times and a British website called Female First, fibbing about the books you’ve read is far more common than you might think. Research from the Lindeman’s Wine & Book Club revealed that 71% of Brits lie to friends and family, claiming to have read books they actually haven’t.

The most common reason cited for engaging in the practice is fear of being perceived as stupid. The study found that more men engage in book bluffing than women—mostly when trying to impress prospective partners. However, women are more likely to lie to friends or colleagues than their male counterparts.

So what books do the Brits most frequently pretend to have read?

The top five are “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, “The Lord of the Rings” by J. R. R. Tolkien, “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte, “Tess of the D’Ubervilles” by Thomas Hardy, and “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien.

(Hmm . . . most of those books have been turned into movies. Is that the key to successful book bluffing?)

We don’t have any stats on book bluffing in America. However, the New York Times did come forward with a list of books their staff members have been less than truthful about having read.

They include: “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace, “The Corrections” by Jonathan Franzen, “1984” by George Orwell, “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and--ironically--“How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read” by Pierre Bayard.

So what about you SodaHeads? Have you ever pretended to have read a book you didn't actually read?

Technically no. I was instructed to read a book for class, but I stopped halfway because I loathed it. I just smiled and nodded if someone talked to me about it.

I got about half way through "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and just could not finish. (Freshman Lit class) I have studied many other books, but have not actually read them cover to cover.

Just once. I checked 'The Red Badge of Courage' out of the local library when I was a kid, along with a few other books. Two weeks later I hadn't gotten to it yet, so I returned it unread. The librarian looked at it and commented on how it must have affected me, and I smiled and agreed. I think it was about 10 years before I got around to actually reading it.

Back when I was in the 4th grade, we had to read a book each week and speak in front of the class about our story. One week I had decided to watch TV instead of reading and a popular TV show was on that evening, so I watch it instead. The show was about a horse that could talk. Mr Ed........... He was recruited to play baseball on one episode and the following day I told the class the book I read was "Mr. Ed plays baseball". Problem is, most of the other kids watched it the night before as well. I was totally busted on that one but at least my teacher gave me a C for creativity!

No, I will freely admit that I don't read as much as I should and feel like I have short changed myself in a way from not reading prominent books. I also will not claim to have read a book if I can remember so.

All the time in High School and College, but mostly because I was reading something else at the time and didn't want to stop to read the selected reading.

I still made really good grades in my Literature classes, though...especially in college.

When I see people who I don't want to talk to, I furrow my brows behind a book and try to look as engrossed as possible

    Otherwise I don't make false claims. If I read it I read it. If I don't, I don't.

    I tell people when I haven't read a book.

If they read it, I ask their opinions about it, and then maybe read it.

    No sense lying about it.

The Last of the Mohicans. Hardest book I've ever read four pages of :). It was for a book report and when I presented it in class I totally sold it like I had read it! I love reading though so that was the only one.

practically no, I will just tell them I haven't read any of those books.. but if a desperate moment comes, I can definitely do the "book bluffing thing" just so everyone will be happy and they won't see me as stupid.

Those that lie about reading a book, are not 'readers' to begin with. I can honestly say I've read all 5 of those top books listed, because I have a special fondness for classic literature. But if someone asks me something like 'Have you read the Hunger Games? or Have you read Twilight?" I'm going to say no, because I haven't and I've no desire to. So I miss out on a conversation about it, there are many more other books to talk about.

Same in college. There was a novel I was supposed to read. As soon as I saw the Spark Notes sitting next to it, I opted for that instead. I still got an "A" on my assignment and after reading the summaries for each chapter, I'm really glad I didn't read that loathsome novel.
