Signing up for insurance can be a pain the neck, but without it you could end up footing a bill you can't afford. Health insurance has taken a prominent spot in politics lately as the government attempts to get basic coverage for more people, but good coverage will never be completely free, and selecting a plan that's understandable and affordable can still be a chore. Let us know your thoughts on insurance with this six-question Quick Poll. We'd love to hear from you!

The claim was less expensive than the rate increase.

I have to cross my fingers on this one but only had one minor fender bender in 1971 and have drove almost a half a million miles without a accident. According to the Insurance institute I should have had about 6 accidents in that time. So only had the insurance pay for one accident.

Never been at fault from an accident. The lady that hit me paid me out of her pocket because she didn't want to pay her deductible or her premium to go up. I thought the point of insuring yourself was so that you had coverage from having to pay out of pocket but why is that almost never is the case?

No, but I've accepted cash payment after being hit. Damage was minor, he was in a hurry. I didn't want the hassle.

I paid for it completely out of pocket b/c it was cheaper than paying the deductible.

I've only been in one fender bender. The insurance went up $300 after the accident. So basically payments are just for their representation. >:(

Just the deductable and some of the things the insurance would not pay because of the "aftermarket" parts. My old car got hit by some mexican one night, they were not insured but I could still drive my car so I did not fix it and traded it in.
  • Red Rage 2012/07/13 13:07:32
Yes, because it was not covered by insurance
    Red Rage
Some mexicans ran a red light and had no insurance, go figure.

Having never had an at fault accident since 1961, I have never paid for an accident otherwise. Solo falldowns on motorcycles, of course I have paid them.

I have also paid these out of pocket because it is cheaper and easier than submitting a claim, dealing with the other individuals insurance and then subjecting yourself to higher premiums.

I hit a Mustang in the rear with my MG. I paid to fix the Mustang and my car because the increase of rates would have been outrageous.

Long story short, it was raining, I hydroplaned off the road and rolled over a fallen mini tree. Although my car was still driveable, it was considered "totaled" so I paid for it out of pocket. I didn't want the rate increase :/

    Edited for typo

I don't drive and we don't own a car.. My husband has a scooter to get to work and we walk or take the bus the rest of the time. Keeps our costs way down not having to worry about gas and insurance and all the little car care related things.
