Signing up for insurance can be a pain the neck, but without it you could end up footing a bill you can't afford. Health insurance has taken a prominent spot in politics lately as the government attempts to get basic coverage for more people, but good coverage will never be completely free, and selecting a plan that's understandable and affordable can still be a chore. Let us know your thoughts on insurance with this six-question Quick Poll. We'd love to hear from you!

The claim was less expensive than the rate increase.

Each time I had an accident, I had insurance. I have not gotten into any in a long time, which is good, because I don't have insurance.

1995. Slight rear-end hit. My fault. Man had 1994 Park Avenue (luxury car at time). Rear bumper-cowl. Paid $1500 for a hunk of plastic. Live and learn. IF tired, stay HOME !!! I was a newer-driver at the time, so rates could have spiked for me.

If it close to the deductible, I will just pay it, no reason to file an insurance claim....and if it was a minor fender-bender, you can pay out of pocket and not alert insurance (to keep your rates from going up). My last (and only 2nd in 10 years) was so minor there wasn't any damage so there was no reason even alert insurance.

No. Never caused an accident. It's illegal NOT to have insurance so why would anyone pay out of pocket unless it's cheaper due to a high deductible, high rate increase, or the person doesn't have insurance and doesn't want to get in a boat load of trouble for not having it.

Of course, only a fool would not be aware that an accident raises the insurance rate that you pay and consequently the yearly payments might end up costing more than the fender bender. My step daughter had two small fender benders in a row, and would have had to pay $1500 a year more in insurance, triple what paying out of pocket for the repair of the other car ended up to be.

One winter I knocked over a city light pole because of ice on the road, it was cheaper in the long run to just pay for the dumb thing than going on my insurance record.

Someone paid ME though. She was a young driver and her father said it was best to handle out of pocket because of her insurance rates.

The teen was very responsible. She hit my car in a parking lot and LEFT A NOTE! I called her and spoke with both her and her father and we settled the whole thing without police or the Insurance company. That father did a great job raising his daughter.

Yes to avoid a rate increase. I was lucky that the body work was not that expensive. But make sure you tell the body shop that you are not going through insurance, they will change you the cheaper rate.

but i didnt pay someone gave me money because he dented my fender and i had a clunker car anyway so he just gave me 100 cash and it was easier than going through insurance. and then my sons friend hit my car on purpose and i got almost 2000 from him for the same car. because he went to court over it. and was ordered to pay restitution

The only accident I've been in was when a guy rammed into my car because he didn't look. Who doesn't look when backing up in parking lot?! We both had insurance, and his paid for my repairs. Once my mom got hit, and a guy paid for her to get her car fixed without notifying insurance because he didn't want the price to go up.
