No offense, but this question is a little unsettling. Because I'm gay, I'm supposed to wear men's clothing, no makeup, ride a Harley or drive a pick up, and generally, be "butch"? Well, I'm not. (although the Harley idea is strangely intriguing). I've met butches, femmes, sissies, bears and all the other supposed sub-groups, but the average gay person acts no differently than anyone else. We're just normal people folks, who happen to love the same sex.

I work with a couple that you would not guess right away. But my favorite by far is the one that I work with that does not act on being gay. He is devoutly religious, married, and now has twins, but every time I hear him, I know. He has the voice, mannerisms, fashion sense, and fastidiously clean demeanor.

Well, for starters, I was raised by white lesbians and none of them acted or behaved how real lesbians are supposed to be portrayed. There was no butch/femme roles in my mom's relationships with womyn!!

Nowadays, I have met quite a few lesbians/gays these days that I would of never ever guessed them being gays in the first place; totally being thrown off, because usually I can spot them a mile away!!

As a musician, I have many friends and acquaintances who are gay but conduct themselves with such discretion that you would never know unless they told you directly.

It isn't really an act though, it's moreso who the person is. They are what they are

I have also met the stereotype gays though. Gotta say, I absolutely can't stand the department store gays...seriously, gotta be so obvious? Just bugs me

...."department store gays" what does that mean?

Like you go to "American Eagle" or "The Buckle" or some clothing store like that, and there are guys working there who are just blatantly obvious.

Oh, you live in Nebraska; never heard of The Buckle store before. But I'm not a teenager and I don't shop or really don't go into kids/teenager stores. I have no clue if A.E., A.F., or Aeropostle (spelling?) are really "gay" stores, nor do I care. Next time I see a boy under age 25, who walks into one of these stores, then I will assume he is "gay"??

I'm not saying that at all. And they're not gay stores, I'm simply staying that a lot of guys who work at those stores are blatantly gay. They often fall under that "stereotype". That's all I'm saying

I wasn't aware a gay person was supposed to act like anyone except themselves. People's personalities aren't based off their sexuality.

The question is a bit biased / negative / stereotypical because I assume by "gay" you mean effeminate (or if you're thinking of lesbians, masculine). Most of the Gay men I know do not act in an effeminate manner (unless, of course, we're kidding around) and you wouldn't be able to pick them out of a crowd as stereotypically "Gay."
