Among other security features, Lookout Labs’ mobile security app helps users locate lost or stolen cell phones. After you’ve downloaded the app, you can log on to the company’s website to locate your phone on a map, activate a loud alarm to find it nearby, lock it remotely, and even wipe personal information to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

Lookout recently compiled data from the app’s fifteen million users, to try to better understand when, where, and how often they are losing their cell phones. Their findings were pretty astonishing. Overall, they determined that last year Americans lost over $30 billion in cell phones. (It’s important to keep in mind that all of their statistics are limited to individuals who use smartphones as well as Lookout’s app. Otherwise, the figures would be far greater.)
Here are some interesting trends that Lookout uncovered:
• Americans lose a cell phone, on average, once a year.
• Most cell phone losses (67%) take place between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
• The top five types of places Americans lose cell phones are coffee shops, bars, restaurants, at the office, and at home.
• The top five cities where Americans lose cell phones are Philadelphia, Seattle, Oakland, Long Beach, and Newark.
• People are more likely to lose their cell phones during major events: such as holidays (particularly Christmas and New Year’s Eve), festivals, and big sporting events.

Symantec, another mobile security provider, has also compiled some interesting information regarding cell phone loss. According to Symantec, only about half of lost phones are returned and nearly all people who find phones (95%) will try to access their information.
Lookout estimates that the average replacement cost for a smartphone device is $200; that does not include “costs associated with lost data, international phone calls, unauthorized online purchases and illicit access to online banking or other accounts.”
That being said, it’s almost shocking how careless we are with our mobile devices.

I finally coated it with red reflective tape so I can spot it in a dark room with my flashlight.
Such is my life...
